Boy wins trip for heroic act United Press International GALVESTON, — Residents plan a VIP celebration to honor a “real hero,” a 7-year-old who fought a half-dog, half-wolf to protect his sister and her friend, last Friday. The Missouri boy, Scott McKenzie, will receive a hero’s welcome later this month be cause he shepherded his youn ger sister and her friend to the safety of a backyard jungle gym when the animal threatened. The half-dog, half-wolf attacked him, however, and his face and body were so severely damaged that Scott required nine operations. It will be about five years be fore all the child’s damage is re paired, said his father, Charles McKenize, a Benita Park, Mo., policeman. Galveston County Sheriffs Lt. John Leonard said he read about Scott in a newspaper and mentioned it to friends. They decided to do something special for the boy. Sheriff joe Max Taylor wrote Scott a commendation and sent him an honorary commission as a Galveston deputy. Leonard also invited Scott and his family to Galveston for a visit. The family accepted. Leonard said he and his group plans a four-day, free-of- charge holiday Oct. 20-24 for the McKenzies — Scott, his pa rents and his two sisters. Many activities are planned for the family, including visits to Sea Arama, the Strand (his torical area), a benefit dance and a barbecue, Leonard said. Texas International Airlines agreed to fly the family from St. Louis to Houston free of charge. ^ i fi S | Saddle mn Sirloly b s Omelet Breakfast b n Saturday, October 16 ^ S N 7:30-8:15 a.m. KLEBERG ATRIUM R Tickets Avail. At The Door *3 f 3 'ZZZ2222222ZZ2ZZZZZ United Press International SPRING — A bail bondsman and ex-Green Beret who suffers from terminal cancer kicked in the door in a burning room Monday to save the lives of a woman and her small son. “I love people more than my self,” Sam McCloud, 41, said. McCloud, who has had more than one close call with death, said he did not consider his run through the fire to save Sheri Learned, 25, and her 4-year-old son, any big deal. McCloud said he saw flames coming out of Learned’s room. McCloud had opened his home to six members of the Learned family earlier this year because they had some financial prob lems. McCloud said the door to the bedroom was secured with a chain lock, which he kicked in. He went through the flames, tried to lure the little boy from the room and screamed as loud as he could for Learned to get up. “He got me out and went over the top of the ted through the flames and got my boy out,” Learned said. McCloud suffered minor burns on one leg, his hands and arms, and his hair was singed. He required no hospital treat ment.
