Rates go to $2,200 a day Stars’ homes for rent United Press International PH ILADELPHIA — For peo ple tired of cruise ships, pack aged adventures or posh hotels, the quest for the dream vacation may be right at home — Eli zabeth Taylor’s Mexican villa, Christina Onassis’ home on Cor fu, or perhaps Prince Charles’ bungalow in the Bahamas. Vacationers looking for something different can make themselves at home in the vaca tion retreats of celebrities from Venice to Barbados — provided they can pay the price. Variety Leisure of Philadel phia lists some 3,000 properties — from cozy London flats to Palm Beach mansions to ramb ling castles in Spain — at daily rates of $80 to $2,200 in season. That not only unlocks the door on vacation getaways own ed by the likes of David Niven and the family of the late Shah of Iran, it often includes the ser vices of a cook and maid, and privileges at the local country club, said Gil Brenner, a 51- year-old Philadelphia real estate agent who has been renting vacation homes for nearly 20 years. He launched into celebrity re ntals about four years ago after a chance meeting with Prince Charles at the Palm Beach Polo Club. “He asked what I do for a liv ing and I said I rent villas,” ex plained Brenner. “He said I should contact his aunt, Princess Margaret, who had a place in the Caribbean she wanted to rent.” Brenner did just that and reached an agreement to offer the princess’s house for vacation rentals. Why would the sister of the Queen of England want to rent her house? “They like to keep the staff busy and they can’t be down there all the time,” said Brenner, a native of Lancaster, Pa., who holds a master’s degree in busi ness from Cornell University. The price depends on the size of the home, its amenities, such as tennis courts and swimming pool, the number of household staff, and whether use of a car is included, he said. Brenner occasionally gets a request he can’t fill, but his properties in Europe, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South Pacific, United States, and Mexico offer enough variety to suit just about anyone’s style.
