A crew from T 8c T Construc tion Co. of Houston was work ing on a gas leak east of a oil separator unit about 8 a.m. when the separator exploded, said Harris County Sheriff’s De partment officials. Pieces from the unit blew as high as 500 feet and were scat tered for one-fourth mile around the site, said Sgt. Tom Wilson. The unit, belonging to Sara toga Gas and Mineral Co., is used in the production of gas to separate liquid components from the gaseous elements. The units are cylindrical or spherical in shape, and separation is accomplished by gravity, with the heavier liquids falling to the bottom and gas rising to the top. Wilson said two employees with burns were taken by LifeF- light helicopter to Hermann Hospital. One man is in serious condition, the other is critical, officials said. A third man with minor in juries was taken to a hospital in Tomball. Several other em ployees were injured in the blast, but none seriously. tie better, ireagi >n the so n theyju that's jo Move over, Schwinn! staff photo by John Ryan Harry Callicotte, a petroleum engineering major, rides a “recumbent icycle” near the MSC Fountain.
