Dr. Thomas Polanyi, execu tive vice president and director of development at Merrimack laboratories in Hudson, Mass., and Dr. Michael Baggish of Mt. Sinai Hospital at Hartford, Conn., made the announcement Monday at the American Col lege of Obstetricians and Cyne- cologists annual meeting. Polanyi said although a varie ty of lasers have medical applica tions, the carbon dioxide laser is most effective in gynecology. “The particular property of this laser is that its radiation is fully absorbed by the biological tissue,” he said. “What this means is you can destroy the tis sue you wish to destroy while the adjacent area remains un affected.” Dr. Michael Baggish, chair man of obstetrics and gynecolo gy at Mt. Sinai, said laser surgery has provided results comparable to conventional therapy in treat ment of premalignant diseases of the cervix, the vagina and die vulva. Baggish said laser vaporiza tion results in minimal blood loss — about half that of convention al surgery — and leads to faster recovery. Use of the laser to treat the sores associated with genital herpes is in the experimental stages, but Polanyi said there is little indication the laser can des troy the herpes virus. “It is certainly a palliative in herpes infection, but it does not cure it ” he said. Because their only surgical device is a tiny beam of light, doctors can work in a tiny space and perform many procedures in their offices on an outpatient basis. “We can operate in an area the size of a silver dollar," lie said. During Monday’s A COG ses sion, members elected Dr. Brooks Renney of Yankton, S.D. to a one-year term as the organi zation’s president. The meeting continues through Thursday. Wanna play?
