You take a "big old range animal," give it some salt water and alfalfa hay and wait. "Maybe by tomorrow you'll have a meadow muffin born," he says. "Then nature takes over." A month or two is required for it to "mature" in the dry western Oklahoma climate and voila — "you've got a fullgrown cowchip," he says. Then you spread the word and thousands of people from all over the coun try and beyond will gather to try to throw the thing the farthest. It has happened every year for more than a decade and will again this week in the. World Championship Cow Chip Throwing Contest, the main fea ture of the Cimarron Territory Celebration. "Why it's so big, I can't tell you," Hindman said of the event that swells the population of the small Oklahoma Panhan dle community from 1,800 to almost 10,000. "It's a fun deal," he said. "You don't see it everywhere. It's your curiosity deal." Apparently it's also an econo mic deal. "It means quite a bit to the community around here," said Hindman, secretary of the Beav er Chamber of Commerce. Tourists wanting to try their hand at pitching immortality and partake of the five-day celebration pack the motels and overflow into surrounding towns up to 50 miles away. "We've even got two people coming in from Ottawa to sing a song," Hindman said. "A Texas man wants to bring his family up here. The kids want to come. He clowns so he's going to be a clown in the parade for free." Tourists will find plenty to do and buy when they arrive for the celebration that began Wednes day. But mostly they come for Saturday's big chip chucking event. The world record cow chip toss is 273 feet by J.P. Putman of Bountiful, Utah, accomplished in preliminary competition in his home state in 1978. The best toss during a world's champion ship contest was 182 feet, 3 in ches, by Leland Searcy of For- gan, Okla., in 1979. Almost everyone in the com munity becomes involved in the festivities. "I was out there with a bank president," Hindman says. "We gathered up cowchips yesterday for two hours in baskets and boxes." It's not that the petroleum- rich area is poverty-stricken, he says, pointing out that "Beaver has got a little oil. They drive ood cars, the people that live ere." However, the cow patties, which used to be burned to heat the pioneer homes and cook meals, serve the community still. "We ship 'em all over the country," Hindman says. "The senior citizens gather them and charge 50 cents apiece for them." They go out in batches of ab out 300 complete with instruc tions on how to properly hurl them and warnings to keep them dry. "If they get moist they break," Hindman says. "People from the East, they're pretty smart people, but they don't know much about a cow chip." He said a woman called from New York inquiring about a pur chase and was surprised to learn "it don't smell." "She says 'you mean they don't stink?"' Hindman says. "That's hard for them to under stand." Friday Movies bride’s childhood sweetheart. 3:30© ★★★ “Toward The Unknown” (1956) William Holden, Lloyd Nolan.
