After a minute of steady, but not overwhelming applause, ab- Review out half the audience stood up to clap for the group’s perform ance, which was presented by the MSG Committee for the Awareness of Mexican- American Culture. The performance began with eight Mexican and Spanish dances. The dancers seemed to be less than enthusiastic at the be- DON T MISS OUR WEDNESDAY SPECIALS. ginning of the performance, but they became more dynamic as the night continued. Several dances were flirta tions between couples. In one dance the girls played coquettes using fans. Another dance was a male solo without music. The dancer provided the dance’s music with his heels. El Curro, a flamenco guitar ist, received a big response from the audience for his five solo performances. He explained to the audience that flamenco guitarists try to “imitate a flamenco dancer.” He does four or five rhythms at one time. With one hand he beats on his guitar to imitate the dancers’ sounds. His left hand plays the melody and his right hand plays an accompaniment. He adds bass sounds with his left thumb. El Curro said he can add a fifth rhythm if he does well. With a grimace on his face while playing, El Curro demons trated each rhythm to the audi ence, which seemed to enjoy the demonstration and his chat. His music’s sound ranged from drums, maracas, an entire orchestra to an accordian.
