But we had sotne real good individual bests.” The Texas A&M women’s team finished third in the meet, totaling 89 points, and Texas won that portion of the competi tion as well. Texas compiled 154 points, and Houston had 119. Texas A&M’s Robert Wind sor, with a throw of 59-5, placed third in the shot put, and Kevin McGinnis placed fifth with a 58- 7. Johnny Hector’s leap of 25 feet placed him second in the long jump, as Troy Amboree of Lamar jumped 25-3 to break the old meet record of 25 feet, set in 1973 by Danny Brabham of Baylor. Hector placed fifth in the triple jump with a 44-9. The Texas A&M 1600-meter relay team, with a time of 3:09.9, was second to Baylor, which ran the event in 3:09.6. The 400- meter relay team finished third with a 40.6 clocking. Thomas said the Aggies did well considering that high hurd- ispi Henderson didn't attend the meet, and javelin-thrower Richard Lamb did not compete. “Overall, we felt like we had a real good meet,” Thomas said. “If we’d had all our personnel there, we’d have had a good chance of winning the meet.” Six Aggies will compete in this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Detroit, Mich. Howard will compete in the high jump, McGinnis will compete in the shot put and Rod Richardson will compete in the 60-yard dash. The mile relay team, composed of Richardson, Gary Scurry, Vernon Pittman and Tony Tolsen, will also run in the meet. For the Aggie womens’ team, freshman Novaita Samuels finished first in the 200-meter dash, qualifying her for the AIAW national meet. Ellen Smith placed in the 400-meter hurdles, Chandai Phillips won the 100-meter hurdles and Marilee Matheny won the 5,000- meter race. Tech scored 223.9 points in the victory while the Aggies had 204.7 points. Southwest Texas State University was third with 117.7 points and Lamar Univer sity scored 40.15 points. David Semon placed fifth in the all-around competition although he was forced to with draw from the high bar competi tion after injuring his hand while performing on the parallel bar, an event he won.
