Although The Texas A&M
en’s track team relinquished a
icet title this weekend, Coach
harlie Thomas cited several
embers of his squad for im-
iressive performances.
Competing at the Border
ilympics in Laredo Friday and
turday, the meet defending-
ampion Aggies finished
:cond in a field of nine teams,
exas compiled 114 points,
exas A&M 92 and Baylor 88 to
ke third place.
“We had a good meet,” Tho
mas said. “The conditions we
ren’t real ideal with the cold
weather, so we held some of
them out and several athletes
didn’t compete. But we had
sotne real good individual
bests.”
The Texas A&M women’s
team finished third in the meet,
totaling 89 points, and Texas
won that portion of the competi
tion as well. Texas compiled 154
points, and Houston had 119.
The Aggies’ top finishes came
in the high jump, where Chuck
Perry won with a mark of 7-1,
and Jimmy Howard took second

“Howard was a little off, but

Texas A&M’s John Cole took
second place in the discus com-
P etition with a 163-9, and Greg
orter finished fifth with his
150-7. Oskar Jakobsson, Texas’
junior from Iceland, won the
event easily with a 188-10 per
formance.
Texas A&M’s Robert Wind
sor, with a throw of 59-5, placed
third in the shot put, and Kevin
McGinnis placed fifth with a 58-
7.
Johnny Hector’s leap of 25
feet placed him second in the
long jump, as Troy Amboree of
Lamar jumped 25-3 to break the
old meet record of 25 feet, set in
1973 by Danny Brabham of
Baylor. Hector placed fifth in
the triple jump with a 44-9.
The Texas A&M 1600-meter
relay team, with a time of 3:09.9,
was second to Baylor, which ran
the event in 3:09.6. The 400-
meter relay team finished third
with a 40.6 clocking.
Thomas said the Aggies did
well considering that high hurd-
ispi
Henderson didn't attend the
meet, and javelin-thrower
Richard Lamb did not compete.
“Overall, we felt like we had a
real good meet,” Thomas said.
“If we’d had all our personnel
there, we’d have had a good
chance of winning the meet.”
Six Aggies will compete in this
weekend’s NCAA Indoor
Championships in Detroit,
Mich. Howard will compete in
the high jump, McGinnis will
compete in the shot put and Rod
Richardson will compete in the
60-yard dash. The mile relay
team, composed of Richardson,
Gary Scurry, Vernon Pittman
and Tony Tolsen, will also run
in the meet.
For the Aggie womens’ team,
freshman Novaita Samuels
finished first in the 200-meter
dash, qualifying her for the
AIAW national meet. Ellen
Smith placed in the 400-meter
hurdles, Chandai Phillips won
the 100-meter hurdles and
Marilee Matheny won the 5,000-
meter race.

The stamp on a letter is only a small part of the cost of
doing business by mail. You have to include the cost
of secretarial time, materials, mail handling and overhead.
That adds up to something like $6.63* You can do
a lot of business with long distance for that amount, take care of
orders faster, and save time and energy as well.
Plus you never have to lick stamps.
