Eastern New Mexico University Finished first in Ithe tourney with 4,413 points, and the University »of Texas came in second with 4,395. The Aggies 'finished with 4,299 points. In the free rifle event, the Aggies’ John Heye ticompiled 1,100 points of a possible 2,000, and -Glenn Park had 1,085. Teammates Todd Woodard and Kurt Nauck finished with 1,063 and 1,051 points, respectively. In the free rifle 'individual competition, John Berry had 1,043 points and Carter Stone had 1,022 points. Texas A&M’s number one air rifle squad : finished third with 1,413 points behind TCU, with 1,438 points and Eastern New Mexico, with 1,417 points. The University of Texas at El Paso had 1,402 points for fifth place and UT had 1,401 points. Of a possible 400 points, Heye had 368, good for second place overall in the event. Troy Smith had 353 points, and Park and Nauck had 346 each. The Aggies’ second-team air rifle squad totaled 1,337 points, Jerrold Scharninghausen leading the way with 348 points. Finishing behind Scharn inghausen were Carter Stone with 340 points, Woodard with 340 and Berry with 309. Team captain Heye said the team, which may not qualify any of its members for the national tourney, has done well this season with several young team members. “This year, we had a good showing of younger people, because I’m the only one who will be leav ing,” Heye said.” There is an outside chance that Heye’s 368 in the air rifle event, a personal best, may qualify for the national tourney. The national tournament will be held March 25-26 at Virginia Military Institute. The Aggies’ next competition will be March 13 at the Central Texas Invitational at UT. by John Wagner Battalion Staff The Arkansas Razorbacks won the ninth annual Southwest Conference Track and Field Meet on Saturday in Fort Worth, but Texas A&M track coach Charlie Thomas wasn’t suprised. The Razorbacks took their second straight indoor cham pionship, running away from the rest of the competition with 128 points. The nearest challen ger was Texas with 87. Thomas’ Aggies finished fifth with 45 points. Arkansas collected four first places, three of those coming in the middle and long distance events. Thomas said the Razor- backs were expected to dominate. “They have so many good distance runners. Until some body beats them, they’ll be the best in the conference,” he said. Sophomore Rod Richardson was the lone first-place finisher for the Aggies. The Shreveport, La. native ran the 60-yard dash in 6.12 seconds, in front of two SURVIVAL . Phillip Epps of TCU and Herkie Walls of Texas finished 2-3 behind Richardson. Stanley Floyd of Houston and Bruce Davis were both favo rites in the 60-yard dash, but Floyd scratched because of a hamstring injury and Davis pul led up lame during the race. Jimmy Howard finished second in the high jump by clearing th 7-2 !/2 mark. Hous ton’s Brian Stanton came in first with 7-4Va jump. In th pole vault, Mike Mullins finished third with a jump of 16- O'/a. Paul Bratloff of Rice broke the old SWC pole vault record set by A&M’s Randy Hall in 1981. Bratloff jumped 16-8!4 inches, besting Hall’s old record by Vi-inch. Kevin McGinnis and Johnny Hector helped the Aggie effort by placing in their events. McGinnis took third in the shot with a personal best of 60-1% and Johnny Hector had a fourth place finish in the triple jump and a sixth place finish in the long jump. James Washington finished fourth in the long jump and the mile relay team finished fifth for the Aggies. Thomas said the Aggies were for the meet, but their lack of depth hurt them. That problem will be solved, Thomas said, when the Aggies beginade- fense of their 1981 outdoor championship Feb. 27. Texas A&M will host Rice University and Lamar University to open the outdoor season. “We’ll have more depth when the outdoor season starts,” Tho mas said. “We won’t be favored to^vin the conference, but we’ll - be stronger.
