Martin Bander, a spokesman at Massachusetts General Hos pital, said surgery began about 8 a.m. and lasted about five hours. Tuesday, doctors said Kissin ger’s coronary artery disease was diagnosed following special x- ray tests called Angiograms. Kissinger, 58, was reported in good physical condition, aside from bis heart ailment, and doc tors said they expect the four- hour bypass operation to be suc cessful. “T he chances of everything going well are very high,” said Dr. Gerald Austen, a long-time family friend and physician, who was to help perform the surgery along with senior heart surgeon Dr. Mortimer Buckley. “He is in excellent health, his heart muscle is excellent,” Au sten said. “There’s some risk in a heart operation, and Mr. Kissin ger and his family understand that. He probably will be more vigorous sometime afterwards.” “I came here last week be cause of a chronic shoulder ache,” a tanned and somewhat overweight Kissinger told a news conference Tuesday. “Tests were conducted, but the symptoms in the shoulder did not explain the pain.” After that, doctors went in the “cardiac direction” and he had a thorough checkup Monday, which lie said was of minimum morning tion tomorrow (Wednesday). “I feel fine. 1 have no other symptoms in addition to thosel have described.” Kissinger served as national security adviser to former Presi- dent Richard Nixon and asset retary of state to both Nixon and former President Gerald Ford, enjoyment. “They came to the conclusion that I do have a heart,” he said, pausing for laughter, “that is in need of some repair, and they are going to do a by-pass opera- Kissinger, who said his onl) other hospitalization had been 25 years ago for an appendec tomy, said he had complete con- fidence in Austen and the hos pital team. Saudi oil minister predicts oil price freeze until 1984 United Press International ABU DHABI — Saudi Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani predicts oil prices will not rise before 1984 and re jected calls for an emergency meeting to counter the oil car tel’s falling prices. “1 think the price of oil will hold urdess there is a political event that disrupts the supply situation,” Yamani told the Saudi newspaper, Gazzet, “even though we don’t think any change would be on a perma nent basis.” The Saudi oil minister said OPEC’s benchmark price, frozen at $34 a barrel last November, would probably hold for two years despite an ex pected slight decline in Saudi production that woidd reduce the surplus. “We also think the freeze will extend to 1983,” he said in the Gazzet interview.” Saudi Arabia is the key to pricing by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countriej because it m oduces half tlrfqt tel’s oil.
