Ma. — An Iti-slibmariiH' plane' from the ait - ift carrier USS Nimit/ crashed the Mediterranean Sea during utine flight exercises Tuesday, ling all four Navy crewmen bard. The plane was attached to Air iti-Submarine Squadron 24 based at Cecil Field Naval Air Sta tion in Jacksonville. Ensign Debbie Martin said the plane was about a mile from the L T SS Nimitz when it went down 70 miles northwest of Sicily. The Nimitz has been deployed in the Mediterranean since late August. Two rescue helicopters were dispatched immediately to the crash sight, but no survivors were visible in the water. Lt. Cmdr. Tom Connor, public affairs officer in Norfolk, Va., for the Atlantic Fleet’s Naval Air Force, said the cause of the crash was under investigation. Let’s Get Acquainted Juniors! Senate Republican leader Ho ward Baker called Reagan s speech historic, saying: “1 believe it will have a profound effect on the foreign policy not only of the United States hut of the world. Senate Armed Services Com mittee* Chairman John Tower, R- Texas, said Reagan s proposal will serve to convince the Western Europeans of the United States sincerity in its quest for arms re duction. Tower said the proposal should help eliminate the threat posed to Western Europe by the enormous buildup of Soviet inter mediate-range missiles. Tower said Reagan’s message will hav e a positiv e effect on tire United States relationships will Western allies.
