With the lowly Mavericks hanging on in the final minutes and missing chance after chance to deadlock the game, Mark Olberd- ing took things into his own hands. Olberding, with 33 seconds left, hit a line drive jumper from 15 feet out along the baseline to boost San Antonio’s lead to four points and break the hack of Dallas. The 6-9. 230-pound Olberding, in his sixth year as a pro even though he is only 25, wound up hitting six shots in those final 33 seconds to bring the Spurs a 112- 105 victory over the Maverieks and extend San Antonio s streak to perhaps its finest game of the sea son only to see its losing streak stretch to eight games. "Olberding answered the ball when he had to, said Dallas coach Dick Motta. “They came down four times and didn’t get a point, but he got them the fifth time down. Gervin, the NBA s leading scor er, had 38 points, including 18 in the third quarter. But he went scoreless in the final period while Dallas reeled off seven straight to cut its deficit to two points with three minutes to play. Before Olberding hit his impor tant shots in the final minute, the Spurs had relied chiefly on Gervin and rookie forward Gene Banks, who scored a career high 23 points. Banks hit the first two San Anto nio baskets of the fourth quarter, expanding a three-point lead at the end of the third period to seven points. “Banks played an excellent game for us tonight, said San Antonio coach Stan Albeck. “He is a very emotional player. You have to calm him down from time to time. Aguirre, the Mavericks rookie sensation, scored 24 points — two above his average. Dallas’ No. 2 draft pick, Rolando Blackman, added 20. Their scoring kept Dallas in the game all night long and the Maverieks might have taken con trol in the third quarter had it not been for one of Gervin s uncon scious streaks. six games. The oldest player in the NBA turned 36 Tuesday night, and to celebrate, he scored 17 points to tie Allen Leavell for scoring hon ors as the Houston Rockets crushed the Indiana Pacers, 102- 82. Both teams ended the game with 4-6 records. “Hayes celebrated a good birthday,” said Houston coach Del Harris. “He took hold and played very well. ” Harris was in a pretty good mood after the game, probably be cause the contest was a blowout from early in the second half. Houston enjoyed a 27-point lead during the fourth quarter. Hayes was not the only oldtim- er to get a good game in. George McGinnis, a big name in Indiana basketball at all levels, scored 12 points, which was second-high for the Pacers. :ERL£At7CR REUABH.l'TA'flON C£MT£R THIRTEEN YEAR9r THAT'e, MORE THAN HAk? When he ap plies himself he looks like he has talent." The NFL announced Tuesday it was fining Thurman for his ac tions during the Nov. 1 game. Thurman has 20 days to make his appeal. There is one talent McGinnis will never have, however, and that is free-throw shooting. He missed four of six charity shots Tuesday, but may have been lost in the crowd because the Pacers made only 23 of 38 free throw attempts. His teammates reportedly plan to raise funds for the fine. Thurman claims he made the tackle head first but did not spear Jaworski, who suffered bruised ribs. Spearing is butting an oppo nent in the back. Leavell and Hayes led six Houston players in double fi gures. Calvin Murphy had 16 points, Tom Henderson had 13, M oses Malone had 11 and Bill Willoughby had 10.
