THE BATTALION MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1981 Page 9 ports >at" eat? with File, Grogan leads Patriots to big win over Oilers itosh •erg. 'art)'’ iller 208 L\- :usj jeet tan ce. eak United Press International FOXBORO, Mass. — It was an ^ct of vindication, the totality of the win reminding all concerned that the New England Patriots can play football. New England eliminated its worst enemy — its own mistakes , and trounced the Houston Oil ers 38-10 Sunday in a superb showing of offensive and defensive prowess. The only question re maining is: Can the Patriots main tain the level long enough to move back into the AFC East pack? “We seem to be back on track, ” said quarterback Steve Grogan, who passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third in his first start since Sept. 13. “I hope our prob- iems are over. We dug ourselves into a pretty good hole but we do have time to get out of it.” The Patriots entered the game with a 1-5 mark, a surprise given that they generally are regarded as having excellent personnel. And Houston coach Ed Biles, angered by Grogan’s 24-yard bootleg TD run with 1:53 left (and New Eng land leading 31-10) tossed a few zingers at his counterpart. New England’s Ron Erhardt. “The key wasn’t us, but the way they played. They have by far the best personnel in the AFC East and it’s amazing they aren’t play ing that well,” Biles said. “They whipped us; it was nothing spe cial. There’s nothing good to come from this, nothing you can learn from this.” J Biles was asked how he felt ab- j out Grogan’s TD run. “How would you feel with it 31- 10? I said very little to Erhardt after the game. Maybe they thought we’d come back, ” he said sarcastically. Grogan’s performance, ll-of-19 for 164 yards, ranked as the Best Vindication by an Individual Per former. The New England de fense, ranked last in the NFL against the rush, earned the group award for holding Earl Campbell to just 86 yards on 27 carries. Campbell had run for more than 360 yards in his last two games. “My whole body hurts,” said Campbell, whose longest gain was 15 yards. He ran just once in the fourth quarter. “It was like a man trying but never getting there. You’re always reaching for the moon.” The Patriots won the game by outscoring Houston 31-0 in the If If * * If * * * I * * * If * If 5k* second half. Grogan pitched a 42- yard TD toss to Stanley Morgan to give New England the lead for good at 14-10. Grogan then added a 10-yarder to Andy Johnson after a John Smith field goal to make it 24-10 after three quarters. Vagas Ferguson and Grogan added scores in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. Fergu son’s came on a 15-yard sweep while Grogan’s was the bootleg, which befuddled both teams. The Oilers, 4-3, scored all their points in the second period on a 9-yard TD pass from Ken Stabler to Dave Casper and a 43-yard field goal by Tony Fritsch. But without the effective rushing game and with the Patriots offense clicking, Houston had to play catch-up and the Patriots responded with four interceptions, two leading to touchdowns. “We stopped worrying about the state because we knew we we ren’t as bad as we looked,” said linebacker Bob Golic, subbing for the injured Steve Nelson. “We were moving as a team, swarming. You know Earl is always going to run well. We played well enough to stop him.” UNEXPECTED PREGNANCY • pregnancy testing • abortions to 20 wfcs. a confidential counseling • total gynecological care Affiliated with Metropolitan Qyn Group 6400 8.W. rreewev 713-784-8685 Oil ERA MSC 0 s POLITICAL FORUM Perverted Hoax or Fundamental Freedom? It was only a week ago the Cow boys were being buried by the loc al populous because of a disastrous performance against San Francis co and the Rams were on a four- game roll that included a big win on the road against Atlanta. But as a result of a day-long series of results, not the least of which was Dallas’ 29-17 whipping of Los Angeles in Sunday night’s nationally televised production, both teams have new outlooks. The Cowboys, with the help of Minnesota and its upset win over Philadelphia, are suddenly back in the race for the NFC East crown while Los Angeles has surren dered its share of the lead in the NFC West and faces a potentially nasty dogfight for the rest of the year with both San Francisco and Atlanta. “We are in our toughest stretch of the season right now, ” said Dal las coach Tom Landry. “How we survive this stretch will mean a lot on whether or not we go into the playoffs. We’re playing excellent football teams from here on out.” For the better part of Sunday night’s struggle, Dallas played the kind of football a team must play against excellent teams. Tony Dorsett rolled to a 159- yard showing, including a 44-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Danny White hit the big passes when necessary, one of them being a. 63-yard scoring throw to Tony Hill with five mi nutes left: in the first half. But with Dallas holding a 26-17 lead late in the third quarter, the game degenerated into a sloppy show of penalties and botched plays. “We were still in the game in the second half,” surmised Los Angeles coach Ray Malavasi, “un til the officials took over.” The Rams were penalized 10 times for 78 yards, but Dallas was assessed a club record 15 penalties for 108 yards. Dallas, however, piled up 496 yards of offense. White recorded the longest touchdown pass of his career (the 63-yarder to Hill, who broke a tackle at the Rams’ 45 and romped the rest of the way un touched), and Rafael Septien broke a club record for the most successful field goals in a row. He ran his current string to nine — kicking a 40-yarder in the opening quarter and a 39-yarder near the end of the game. The Cowboys’ other points came on a 1-yard run by Ron Springs and a safety recorded when Los Angeles quarterback Pat Haden was sacked in the end zone by Harvey Martin. Los Angeles fell behind, 19-0, but rallied briefly in the second quarter to score on a 2-yard run from Wendell Tyler and a 40-yard field goal by Frank Corral. The Rams final points came on a 43- yard throw from Haden to Drew Hill in the third quarter — the only touchdown by either team in the second half. “The Rams could not have been too fired up if they looked at our films from the San Francisco game (a 45-14 loss),” said Landry. “But I thought we had an excellent team etlort tonight. I thought every area of our team was hustling and working hard. We knew we had to play well tonight.” Dallas’ victory gave it a 5-2 re cord, a game back of Philadelphia. Los Angeles is now 4-3, also a game behind the division leading 49ers. “The Cowboys had a big loss last week and they came out all fired up tonight,” said defensive back- return specialist Leroy Irvin. “I really don’t think we were ready to play the Cowboys. They have a good football team and we’ll prob ably meet them again. “Their defense, which is good. was especially good at times! tonight. ” Los Angeles saw a number of players leave the game, including tight end Henry Childs, corner-! back Pat Thomas, tackle Irv Pank-) ey and center Rich Saul.
