Collins has managed to evade the conceits of the band on this solo effort, although he has a great time, including more than just a little musical experimentation on the record. "Face Value" is a technically exciting record. Collins presses at the boundaries of pop music without ever totally stepping out of bounds with his re freshing experimentation. Collins is a drummer, but the major portion of the album's opening song, "In The Air Tonight," is rhythmically sup ported only by an electronic drum machine. "Rhythm machine" is a dirty word to most drummers, who feel threatened by a computerized rhythm sec tion that could put a live drum mer out of business. Collins, however, doesn't feel threatened, and in fact makes masterful use of the rhythm machine, and later on in the song comes in also with some bone-crunching "real" drum ming of his own. The instrumentation on "In The Air Tonight" is sparse, with Collins' gritty vocal comman ding all the attention. He uses his voice as an instrument on this song, not just blandly sing ing the words but feeding his voice through a "vocoder," a voice synthesizer, for a haunt ing effect amid the experiment/ production 'itiaY periectiy cap tures the angry mood of the song, making it one of the most commanding revenge songs of the year. The songs of "Face Value" are thematically linked, and Collins purposefully makes the first side's tunes run together with out breaks in between them, to keep the theme going. On the heavily experimental first side musical themes recur; traces of the melody and synth esizer riff from "In The Air Tonight" re-appear in the other tunes, and the drum break in that song shows up again in "Hand in Hand." Side one ends with two in strumentals. "Droned," electro nic and melodic, segues into "Hand in Hand," which boasts some bright horn arrangements in contrast to the repetition of "Droned." The hit single "I Missed Again" opens the album's second side. In contrast to the haunting, sparse production of the first side's opener, "I Missed Again" is arranged and per formed in the more traditional pop idiom. Collins uses the horn players from soul band Earth, Wind and Fire and establishes catchy rhythmic and melodic hooks early in the song. "7 Missed Again" sets the pace tor the more predictable second half of the a/bum, which includes a stirring piano ballad, "You Know What I Mean," as well as several uncomplicated rock tunes. Collins is convincing both as experimentalist and as tradition al rocker. What makes the eclec tic combination of musical styles work is Collins' sincere delight in his music, evident through out the album. One can tell that Collins had a good time making the record, and it never gets heavy-handed. Phil Collins' stamp of approv al for his first solo album is in the photo of his almost-smiling face that fills the album's front cover. Taken at "face value," Collins has made a challenging, though unpretentious, enjoyable re cord. Monday Movies AFTERNOON 3:00© “Clambake” (1967) Elvis Presley, Shelley Fabares.
