The White House granted per mission Wednesday for the 14- year-old, who traveled to Egypt in 1979 as a guest of Sadat, to fly to Egypt aboard Air Force One as part of the official U.S. delegation. “It was Sam’s dream to pay this last farewell to his hero, ” said Rep. Carroll Campbell, R-S.C., who arranged Sam’s trip at the request of the teenager’s father. “I com mend a compassionate Reagan White House for making this dream come true.” Sam was scheduled to fly to Washington today and travel to Egypt aboard Air Force One with former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon as well as other U.S. officials. The South Carolina youth, who regarded Sadat as a hero for his peace-making efforts with Israel, never got to meet the Egyptian president during his visit two years ago, but the two exchanged cards at Christmas. Sam learned of Sadat’s death in his civics class Tuesday. He said he was “excited and honored” by the opportunity to pay tribute to a man he describes as “one of the greatest statesmen who ever lived.” The teenager said his interest in military history and the Middle East prompted him to write Sadat in 1979, praising his peace-making efforts.
