LIBERTY, S.C. — Ninth grad
er Sam Brown, dressed in his new
gray three-piece suit, will stand
alongside three former U.S. presi
dents and other world leaders at
Saturday’s funeral for slain Egyp
tian President Anwar Sadat.
The White House granted per
mission Wednesday for the 14-
year-old, who traveled to Egypt in
1979 as a guest of Sadat, to fly to
Egypt aboard Air Force One as
part of the official U.S. delegation.
“It was Sam’s dream to pay this
last farewell to his hero, ” said Rep.
Carroll Campbell, R-S.C., who
arranged Sam’s trip at the request
of the teenager’s father. “I com
mend a compassionate Reagan
White House for making this
dream come true.”
Sam was scheduled to fly to
Washington today and travel to
Egypt aboard Air Force One with
former Presidents Jimmy Carter,
Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon as
well as other U.S. officials.
The South Carolina youth, who
regarded Sadat as a hero for his
peace-making efforts with Israel,
never got to meet the Egyptian
president during his visit two
years ago, but the two exchanged
cards at Christmas.
Sam learned of Sadat’s death in
his civics class Tuesday. He said
he was “excited and honored” by
the opportunity to pay tribute to a
man he describes as “one of the
greatest statesmen who ever
lived.”
The teenager said his interest in
military history and the Middle
East prompted him to write Sadat
in 1979, praising his peace-making
efforts.
