Page 12 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1981 Sports Rangers release Jenkins games this year and lost eight. His earned run average was 4.50. In six seasons with the Rangers, from 1974 to 75 and again from 1978 to 1981, Jenkins had a 93-72 record. The only blemish on Jenkins re cord as a Ranger came in the 1980 season when the Rangers traveled to Toronto, Jenkins hometown, and cocaine was found in his lug- Softball team keeps rollin By FRANK L. CHRISTLIEB Battalion Staff Although Coach Bob Brock of the Texas A&M University women’s softball team has given his freshmen a great deal of the credit for the team’s 20-2 record, the upperclassmen have played important roles as well. Names like Lisa Martinez, Iva Jackson, Josie Carter and Gay McNutt have been the most fre quently mentioned names on the team through the first four weeks of the season. However, Brock says the performances of the fresh man players have overshadowed the contributions of the veteran players, who have silently led the Aggies to their impressive record. Brock cited the play of Shannon Murray, Carrie Austgen, Karen Guerrero, Patti Holthaus and Mary Lou Youngblood as critical to his team’s success. Murray re cently had a cast removed from a broken finger on her throwing hand, and Brock is pleased with the efforts she’s made since re turning. “Shannon has come back in the last two tournaments, and is be ginning to contribute again,’’ Brock said. “She’s coming on and she’s doing a good job. She’s been in a kind of cheerleader spirit role (while not playing), but she’s real ly come on. “Mary Lou Youngblood has been struggling all year and she’s come out of it. Her fielding has been perfect and she’s done a good job. It’s really good to see her break out of it now. The seniors and our old hands are beginning to come in and do well.” Brock also praised the play of Texas Women’s University trans fer Linda Lancaster, who has play ed first base and catcher after hav ing played centerfield at TWU.
