I’ll have to experi ment some more to decide for sure.” She said the fall is a time for experimentation. She has been teaming freshmen with upper classmen to help the freshmen gain experience. Cannon said senior Terri Nuetze also looked good in her first competition in almost a year. Nuetze had to quit the team last fall because of an ill ness, but recovered and has fought back to win a spot on the team. “I think Terri will be primari ly a doubles player,” Cannon said. “But she had to win a sing les spot to make the team be cause that was the area she needed the most work on.” Nuetze made it and now the left-hander is working well in practice and in competition. “She has all the shots but still needs work on her endurance and timing,” she said. “I am thrilled Terri is back. I’m protid of the way she fought back from her illness to win a spot her senior year and ... work her way back into the lineup.” The next competition for both the men and women will be at the 12-team Texarkana Collegiate Invitational. Teams are not final but Arkansas, Texas A&M and South Carolina will bring both men’s and women’s teams. Arkansas-Little Rock, Oral Roberts and Louisiana Tech will bring only their women’s teams. A final list of teams is expected next week. isl- Top-ranked teams test men VKlH Runners hope for healthy Dallas finish of re By RICK STOLLE Battalion Staff gjAfter a couple of slight dis- ■xrintments in the last two Bets, the Texas A&M women’s Bss country team will travel to Alias for the University of Texas ■Arlington Invitational meet. S "But little by little, we are get- ■g healthier,” coach Bill Nix ■d. “We are better mentally pre- Aed for this match and I believe K have a good shot at second. ” ■The coach said he thinks the team can beat all the teams at the met except Texas. the University of e “■“It is just too early in the year to catch Texas,” he said. “They have iar no injuries and great athletes. In a vi* couple of weeks, things could be 3kl different, though.” He said health is the big differ ence right now. The Aggies are simply not too healthy. “We have three healthy, run ners now,” Nix said. “Lisa McCor- stin will run with a plastic brace on her sprained ankle. Suzanne Shef field is still weak from an illness and Kim Cloud is also weak from an illness.” He said McCorstain is much better from the severe sprain she received two weeks ago but the ankle cannot take all the pounding of a race. “She has been running well in practice this week,” he said. “But we are not about to take a chance on her so we are putting her in a brace.” He said the team is in fairly de cent shape despite the injuries. The Aggies finished third last week at the Rice Invitational and at the Texas A&M Invitational the week before. Teams competing in the UTA meet are: Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, North Texas State Uni versity, Abilene Christian, Rice, Baylor, and Northeast Louisiana. By RICK STOLLE Battalion Staff In the first of only four road trips during the fall season, the Texas A&M men’s tennis team now faces what will probably be its toughest test. The Aggies travel to Austin Saturday to compete in the Uni versity of Texas Three-Way tour nament against Trinity University and host Texas. All three teams were in the national top 20 for most of the 1981 spring season. Texas A&M even tually fell out of the top 20 but finished ahead of Texas in the Southwestern Conference. Texas finished 19th in the poll and Trin ity was eighth. The Collegiate Tennis Coaches Association puts out the poll every two weeks dur ing the spring. “Both Trinity and Texas have very good players,” said Texas A&M coach David Kent. “I think Trinity may have the edge but the tournament will be on Texas’ home court.” He said the team has been prac ticing very hard in preparation for the match but will still go to Austin as the underdog. The team will be short-handed as Brian Joelson will miss the tournament. Joelson will be going home to Portland, Ore. Saturday to watch the Davis Cup competition there, and will return to the team Monday. “It will be a fun experience for Brian,” Kent said. “He wouldn't miss it for the world and it’s OK with me.” Kent said the match would be a great tune-up for the rest of the Texas A&M fall schedule. The matches will be tough and just the right experience for the freshmen, he said. “It will be a very tough road trip,” the coach said. “Our fresh men will find out the hard way what it is like in a college road trip.” He said the experience will help the freshmen mature into fine ten nis players. “We have one of the best fresh men and transfer crops we have ever had,” he said. “Kimmo Alkio, Greg Hill, Mike Pazourek and our transfers Arnold Kettenacker and Van Berry will get some valuable play and experience in this tourna ment.” Kent predicted a great tourna ment with any team winning. However, he said Trinity has one of the finest teams in the country and will be hard to beat. “But the competition will be the best you can find anywhere,” he said. “It will be one of the best tournaments of the fall.” No Aggies are ranked in the tournament and many drew top- seeded players for their matches. In fact, the Aggies drew three of the top four players for their first round of the tournament. Genaro Fernandez will go against top seed Charles Honey of Trinity in the second round after both players receive a bye in the first. Freshman Alkio also had a tough draw. He will go against second-seeded Paul Crozier of Texas in the second round after also drawing a first-round bye. Freshman Hill will be going against fourth seed Mark Pinchoff of Trinity in the first round. Junior Tom Judson drew Peter Mako ofTrinity, sophomore trans fer Berry goes against Doug Craw ford of Texas, junior Ron Kowal drew Edgar Giffenig of Texas, Kettenacker goes against Ted Erck of Texas and Pazourek drew David Petty of Trinity. All singles matches are slated to begin at 2 p.m. In doubles only one Aggie team drew one of the top seeds. Alkio- Fernandez drew the third seeds Honey-Kreg Yingst of Trinity in the first round. Other Aggie draws are Hill- Berry against Chris Kennedy-Tal Henry of Trinity, Kettenacker- Pazourek against Erck-Crozier of Texas and Judson-Kowal against Mike Brown-Giffenig of Texas. For their next match, the Aggies will also be on the road. Miimm I TEQUILA TEQUILA TEQUILA TEQUILA GOLD OR SILVER IMPORTED A BOTTLED BY TEQUILA JALISCO S A ST LOUIS.
