CHRISTLIEB Battalion Stall When fullback Paul Winston of the Texas A&M University soccer team scored two late goals Sunday against the University of Texas, he and his teammates still had hopes of winning. The Aggies, who scored first in Sunday’s match with the Lon ghorns, fell behind 3-1, making prospects dim for the hosting Texas A&M team. However, when the Longhorns were penal ized twice late in the game, Win ston took advantage of his two penalty shots to kick the tying goals past University of Texas goalie Amir Miremadi. The two goals were the last of the match, as the two teams play ed out the remaining minutes to end in a 3-3 tie. The tie was the Aggies’ first Southwest Confer ence Soccer League match of the season, giving the team a 1-3-1 record for the season. About four minutes into the first half, Aggie forward Neto Walsh scored to give Texas A&M an early lead. Twenty minutes later, the Longhorns tied the score, sending a hard shot past Aggie goalie Ken’s Automotive 421 S. Texas scored about five minutes later to take a 2-1 lead at halftime, and the Aggies’ early lead had quickly disappeared. Neither team scored again until the 15-minute mark of the second half, when University of Texas for ward Ralph Wood gave the Lon ghorns a 3-1 lead on shot high over Holquien’s head. Although the Aggie goalie leaped, the hall had been cleanly kicked into the top of the net out of his reach. Winston felt the Aggies had built enough momentum to score a winning goal, but that thePe. wasn’t enough time. “Just a couple more minutes and we would have had them — it was real close. I think after we scored that first goal three or four minutes into the game, we just let up a little.” SCHMALTZ’S SPECIAL Monday and Thursday After 5 p.m. A SCHMALTZ ICE TEA CHIPS SPECIAL! @2 68 '3 By FRANK L. CHRISTLIEB Battalion Staff Opponents of the Texas A&M Jniversity women’s softball team earned early about the Aggies >itching strength. Now they’re jiiiekly finding out about what had e bast ieen cited as one of Texas A&M’s veaknesses: hitting. After the results of this veekend’s Stephen F. Austin In- mestH National tournament, Aggie idversaries should consider the cam’s hitting to be as solid as its pitching. The Aggies won all six of their lames in the tourney, picking up 15, 15, 13 and 11 hits in four of heir games on the way to the ten championship. The team corn- lined a perfect game, two no- iitters and a one-hitter with its trongest hitting of the season to hut out five of six opponents. After the first three weeks of the season, the Aggies now have a 20- 2 record. In the Aggies’ first game, Lori Stoll threw a perfect game, strik ing out 12 in leading her team to a 7-0 victory over former Texas A&M coach Bill Galloway and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Her teammates totaled 13 hits, with Josie Carter and Patti Holthaus each going 3-for-4. Nicholls State University found Shan McDonald too tough to hit in the Aggies’ next victory. McDo nald pitched a no-hitter while Texas A&M scored 10 runs before the game was called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run limit. The Aggies had 15 hits, with Lisa Martinez picking up three and Eya Resendez two. Stoll pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight against Sam Houston State University in the next game, as the Aggies won 2-0. Freshman catcher Gay McNutt hit her first home run as an Aggie, bringing home the two runs that carried her team to victory. Against Pan American Univer sity, McDonald pitched another no-hitter in the Aggies’ 15-0 vic tory. Texas A&M had 15 hits in the game, which was called again after the fifth inning. Martinez had three hits to lead the Aggie offense. Martinez then had her chance to outdo the pitching perform ances of Stoll and McDonald, and she came through with a 6-0 shut out of host team'Stephen F. Au stin. The freshman pitcher posted 13 strikeouts, while the Aggies had 11 hits in the easy win. Iva Jackson and Mary Lou Young blood had three hits apiece for Texas A&M. In the tournament champion ship, the Aggies faced the Univer sity of Texas at Arlington, who ear lier in the season gave the Aggies one of their two losses. Stoll pitch ed a two-hitter as the Aggies won 4-1, with Jackson, Carter and Youngblood combining for six of Texas A&M’s hits. Stoll is now 5-1, McDonald has an 8-1 record and Martinez’ re cord is 7-0. The Aggies travel to Killeen Friday to play in the Sam Houston Invitational tournament.
