And since opinions are general ly easy to come by, they are even easier to be disagreed with. And these selections should be the basis for some good arguments. With that introduction, I would like to semi-proudly present my "Top Ten" artists of the year for 1980: 10: Utopia's "Deface the Music" — In this album Todd Rundgren and Utopia come fairly close to du plicating the masterpiece produc tions of the Beatle's "Sergeant Pep per's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Magical Mystery Tour." They have it down to the letter, right down to the eerie, mono-like sound, the noises in the back ground, cars buzzing by, voices and police sirens from nowhere. With the cuts "Hoi Poloi" and "Everybody Else is Wrong," Uto pia tries to convince the listener that they are really John, Paul, George and Ringo, which is not such a bad idea. 9: Bruce Springsteen's "The River" — It's been over two years since the Boss' last rock 'n' roll epic, "Darkness on the Edge of Town," and he came out with a two-record set featuring the E- Street Band playing as well as ever. Best cuts include "Hungry Heart," which has a nice, Latin- influenced melody with good har mony parts, and "Sherry Darl ing," a fun party song that re minds one of the Beach Boys' "Bar bara Ann." 8: Def Leppard — Def Leppard is one of the youngest bands to invade America's shores. When its first album came out last year the band members' average age was 18. Def Leppard presents the lis tener with a good and unique de but album, showing the "down" side of life. 7: Van Halen's "Women and Children First" — Van Halen is known as being a "group on the edge." The result of their unres trained fury is the album "Women and Children First." Not giving way to trendy, new wave hype. Van Halen presents its own ver sion of heavy-metal unheard of in recent years, which is definitely rock at its best. 6: Judas Priest's "British Steel" — One can't name the year's best without recognizing this album, which showcases the group's grit ty, wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am style of grunt rock. Priest delivers a sermon that acknowledges crime as a way of RECORDS getting out of the slums. They preach a song, "Breaking the Law," which is well-done musical ly and spiced with bitter-tasting, slap-in-the-face lyrics. 5: Triumph's "Progressions of Power" — With an album that perhaps matches their last effort. "It's Just a Game," lead guitarist Rick Emmet drives home a song — the supreme, accoustical achieve ment "Finger Talking" — which clearly marks him as a talented, classical guitarist. "Hard Road" is my favorite cut on the album. Telling about the frustrations that are ahead in life, it is quite a change from "Hold On." 4: Scorpions' "Animal Magnet ism" — This excellent album, which follows the earlier "Love Drive," proves that the Scorpions are one of the most unique and talented groups around. They actually improve album after album. "The Zoo," "Falling In Love" and "Make It Real" are three songs that show what an ex cellent album "Animal Magnet ism" really is 3: Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" — As first place closes in, notice a move towards more thought-challenging and melodic songs, such as those presented on this album. "Heaven and Hell" represents the initiation of lyricist/vocalist Ronnie James Dio into the Sabbath fold. Dio utilizes his creative abili ties on songs like "Children of the Sea." 2: Pink Floyd's "The Wall" — After a long absence Pink Floyd came back in 1980 with one of the most brillant creations since their last classic, "Dark Side of the Moon." "The Wall" is an entranc ing "story" about the adventures of a fictional rock star, Mr. Floyd, who builds an emotional "wall" about himself to block out happi ness and fulfillment. This is a very good concept album, and meets Pink Floyd's high standards. 1: The Doors' "Greatest Hits" — Jim Morrison, the Doors' lyricist/ vocalist who died in Paris in 1971 and is now wanted for resurrec tion, was the "Lizzard King" poet and singer of the '60s under ground scene. The two best cuts from this album were selected from the Doors' last album together, "L.A. Woman", which runs a close second to "Greatest Hits". =r o-“iu rs E <d o- ? B 8? 3 S a " v;
