Bobby Slovak, a member of [SANE, said the walk was aimed at ucating people about the danger- influence of the nuclear industry |i Texas, and showing BSANE’s mmitment to promoting alterna- e energy sources. BSANE is the local chapter of the Lone Star Alliance, the statewide anti-nuke organization that spon sored the walk. I Slovak cited extensive uranium lining, radioactive waste disposal, two nuclear power plants under con- uction at Glen Rose and Bay City d a nuclear bomb factory near arillo as examples of the perva- eness of the nuclear industry in jUT opens bhildren’s legal clinic United Press International I AUSTIN (UPI) — The University of Texas Law School has established ajChildren’s Rights Clinic to repre sent children whose parents are ac- ised of abuse or neglect, university [trials said Monday. The clinic is financed by a $40,086 ant from the U.S. Office of Educa- on. A 1979 amendment to the Family Law Code requires that torneys be appointed to represent dldren in such cases but the law ade no provision for paying the tomeys. The clinic matches up the chid- ren’s need for representation with the law students’ need for experi ence representing clients in actual Carter’s si ; ^ ses - lation coill BSANE members left Saturday morning to walk until Sunday with members of other chapters in the state, some of whom plan to cover the entire 350 miles from the south Texas uranium mines to the Com anche Peak nuclear power plant near Glen Rose. Slovak said BSANE, which in cludes Texas A&M University stu dents and faculty, public school teachers and other interested mem bers, is a “non-violent activist group,” whose goal is to promote alternatives to nuclear energy. The group has held vigils to com memorate the bombing of Hiroshi ma and the anniversary of the Three- Mile Island nuclear accident. BSANE also circulates petitions and newsletters in the community and shows educational films at its month ly meetings. Slovak said the group’s next big project is a “Solar Fair” in the spring to give the public “hands-on” experi ence in building solar and wind pow er systems for their homes. “The idea is to have power coming from everybody’s home, instead of a central power plant,” Slovak said. The fair will feature dual-purpose solar greenhouses. These structures not only help grow vegetables but help heat the home. Solar water hea ters will be another feature at the fair. “We are looking for renewable, clean sources of energy,” Slovak said. Slovak said the same technolo gy that turned the calculator into a practical, inexpensive tool that any one can use may make solar-based energy feasible for widespread use in the near future. “A lot of the alternatives are avail able now,” Slovak said, “and a lot more are in development.” nocraticc omyancM sident’sca! . captured iresque" rector of “The bureaucracy doesn’t neces- irily serve the best interests of the child, said John J. Sampson, direc tor of the clinic. “In these cases everyone involved professes to have the best interests of the child fore most in his mind, (but) the parents’ or the bureaucracy’s own interests may sometimes interfere.” jal rights' INTEVEP, S.A.
