JOHNSON Battalion Reporter James Boren’s favorite painting, at least of the ones he’s painted himself, is "Lifetime Cowboy.” It is a portrait of an old timer he knew, whose sensitivity he said he can actually feel. Texas Artist James Boren is one of the artists who appeared in Rud der Tower last week to promote the display “The Cowboy and the New West.” Boren said he began his career as an artist while very young. “You know how children are. They have tendency to try and copy ‘Old West’ show opens everything they see, and that’s what I did," Boren said. Immediately after Boren gradu ated from high school in Temple, World War II began, he said, and art school had to wait to 6 years. Deciding what to paint isn’t easy, Boren said. “I do an awful lot of traveling and looking for subject matter," he said, “and I visit a lot of modern day ran ches. “There are still a lot of modern day ranches where they even run the chuck wagon and round up cat tle in the spring and fall. “I go through Arizonia, Mexico and Colorado seeking out things to draw.” The decision of which colors to use to achieve the total effect isn’t a matter of trial and error, Boren said. “To begin with, the subject mat ter determines what colors are to be used. Secondly, you have to use good color schemes. You have to know which colors are harmonious and which ones contrast,” Boren said. “It is very difficult for an artist to make it today without good instruc tion, because it takes hard work and you have to study extremely hard,” Boren said. Another artist featured in the ex hibit with Boren is Melvin C. War ren, whose work also embraces the western theme. Warren is a 60-year-old artist who has painted portraits of famous people, such as former President Lyndon Johnson. Another exhibit, the Gihon Foundation Collection, is being shown in the MSC Gallery. This collection was a part of the private collection owned by Bette Graham, the inventor of the Liquid Paper correction fluid. Two pieces of particular interest in the Gihon collection are paintings by Georgoa O’Keefe and Dorothy Hood. O’Keefe’s oil on canvas is called “Taos-New Mexico” and is worth $110,000. Dorothy Hood’s painting "Persephone” depicts the greek goddess; queen of the underworld. A security guard is posted at the gallery during the day. The gallery is locked at night to protect the $272,500 collection. The faculty selects the programs shown, the purpose of which is to educate the students about the different aspects of art. 1 EVENIN 7:00 O G Farmer Karras) cattle over thi land (L from Ei marry combe. 0 © FEUD Janet Bert Pai compete sion of tfi 8:00 0 DRE> tionally boy, wh< ish Cok flees int couver "adopted shaman his mute 9:000 0 EXPLOSIC MUSIC try-westei ing Gler Cash, Ro; drell and a specia Ford’s D.C.(R) 10:00 HBO ON KLES At The Saha is the sei castic on aplenty comedian his audienc 10:30 0HAROL TIVAL ous film of Harld 11:00© ADEI personali Mexican in Bryan MORt 9:00© WEEK H “Terror T And, like also funny.
