Until they do that without me I don’t have to prove anything to Cincinnati.” Beating Atlanta was just as important said Morgan. “We couldn’t afford to lose this ball game. We’ve only got nine games left. They’re all important now. We have to beat the Reds, of course. But the wins have to keep coming no matter who we play to beat the Dodgers. I’m hoping we can open up a little gap before we go to Los Angeles for a season-ending three game series.” The Dodgers caught the Astros Wednesday when they beat San Francisco while Houston was losing to the Braves. But the Giants won Thursday afternoon 3-2 enabling the Astros to regain a one-game lead. “You’d have to favor Houston at this point,” said Braves pitcher Phil Niekro, the loser to the Astros Thursday night. “But whoever wants it badly enough is going to win it. It’s not going to get down to breaks.” Houston, which has been playing since mid-season without pitching star J. R. Richard, got a scare Thurs day night when Nolan Ryan’s back started acting up again. “We don’t know how serious Ryan’s back problem is,” said Astros manager Bill Virdon. “He’s been bothered with it off and on all season and we hope it will be all right. We re counting on him for two more starts.” By RICK STOLLE Battalion Staff As one of the largest clubs on the campus of Texas A&M University., the Sports Car Club likes to stay active. With approximately 100 members, the club has scheduled an average of six events a month for the fall. “We like to have a lot of things to do,” said Chuck Schmitt, president of the club, “because when some of the members can’t make it, it’s no big deal. They can always come to the next event.” The club has only four scheduled meetings left on the list with the remainder being activities. They have six car displays left, with one today at Rudder fountain. “The dis plays are just for members to show off their cars,” said Schmitt, “and to draw attention to the club. The club has rallies, autocrosses, scavenger hunts and parties, but everything builds toward the Ag- giecross at the Texas World Speed way. “The rallies and everything are fun but our big event is Aggiecross. ” he said. “We have parties after the rallies and just hang around, drink whatever you like and talk about cars.” He said a lot of the cars are not fast or fancy, just street machines. A rally is an event where the club gets together and everyone is hand ed a map. They follow the map to a predetermined destination and the events first one there wins. If anyone gets lost, they can open an envelope that contains the final destination. Once there, the party commences. The ninth AggieCross will be Nov. 1 and 2. It is the first two-day event the club has attempted, Schmitt said. An entry fee of $35, safety inspection and drivers license is all that is required to enter. A racing license is not required. Schmitt said approximately 120 cars from around Texas are expected to be there. “It is a race against the clock,” he said. “So no more than two cars will be on the track at one time.” Yet, he said speeds do get up to 120 mph. The inspection is a rigorous, thorough examination of the car. It must make a 30 mph stop without steering and without locking the brakes up, he said. The tires must have a penny’s head worth of tread. The brakes and bearings must be in order. A car with any leak will not be allowed to race. “We don’t want any unsafe cars out there,” Schmitt said. “We want everybody to have a good time but we also want it safe.” The event will be three runs apiece on Sunday, he said, with Saturday being a practice day. “The drivers can make as many runs as they get in line for,” he said. The winning time will be posted as soon as the last run is completed and the winner will receive a trophy.
