McNiel have replaced feverish campaigning with quiet activity for the time being in their race for the state’s Fifth Senatorial District seat. Caperton, who won an upset victory over incum bent Sen. William T. Moore of Bryan in the May Democratic primary, said he is working with his law practice now, and only devoting Thursdays and Fri days and an occassional weekend to the campaign. “We’ve slowed down considerably, and cut back on all campaign activities for June and July,” Caper ton said. McNiel said that he will not begin actively cam paigning until closer to the election, and said he is currently running a “campaign of organization.” He said he is meeting with conservative Democrats, who will organize each of the counties for him. “I am running as a Republican, and I have to face the fact that there are 80,000 registered Democrats in this district, and only 10,000 Republicans. So to win I will need the support of some people who voted in the Democratic primary.” Both Caperton and McNiel agree that the election could be decided by the direction taken by voters who supported Moore in the Democratic primary. Although Caperton would, as the Democratic candi date, seem the logical heir to those votes, he does not consider them his — yet. “I am not about to get overconfident,” he said. “McNiel is a formidable candidate, and the Republi can party in this area is very well organized.” But he said he is “certainly going to try” to win over the Moore vote, and it is with that in mind that he met with the Texas A&M System Board of Re gents May 27. Caperton said the meeting went “very well,” and that he and the board had “a fine discussion. ” It goes without saying that Texas A&M is of great importance to me, and I am looking forward to work ing toward the University’s continued success,” he said. Although he is running as a Republican, McNiel is confident that he will attract the votes of the Moore democrats. “Many of Moore’s supporters have told me that they will vote for me,” he said. “He’s conservative and I am conservative, so I believe I’ll get the conser vative vote — whether Democrat or Republican. ” Both McNiel and Caperton will heat up their cam paigns once the summer is over. Caperton’s strategy during the primary was to go out and meet people, drinking coffee at restaurants rather than holding large rallies or dinners in the cities he visited. He plans to continue with this strategy of “direct cam paigning” in the fall, but he will also hold a few major functions to “thank the people who have helped us,” he said. McNiel also plans to avoid major functions in favor of personal campaigning. He said his major problem is a lack of name-identification, and he hopes to overcome that problem through the use of bumper stickers and lawn signs. McNiel also said that shaking hands and meeting people will win an election, and he plans to do a lot of both. Carter: Can we deport leaders? United Press International WASHINGTON — President Carter has asked the Justice Depart ment if the United States legally can deport the ringleaders of the Fort Chaffee riot. At the same time, congressional leaders urged Carter Tuesday to crack down hard on rioters and other “criminal elements” among Cuban refugees and send them back to their communist-ruled island. At the White House, press secret ary Jody Powell said Carter has asked the Justice Department for a review to determine whether deportation of the ringleaders is a “practical legal option.” “The United States must not be allowed to become a dumping ground for criminals,” said Senate Democratic leader Robert Byrd, joining House colleague Jim Wright in calling for immediate deportation of some Cubans. “The rioters must be identified, arrested and deported,” Byrd said in a speech on the Senate floor. “Those found to be criminal elements must also be deported — expeditiously. ” Do You Need A Good, Honest Mechanic?
