Page 10 THE BATTALION MONDAY, MARCH 24, 1980 sports Ags sweep H£.Y, i THINK FINALLY GOT THi. HANG OF THIS * «F S MO£A 1980 Red Raiders By RICHARD OLIVER Staff Writer Ag track team runs second By KATHLEEN McELROY Sports Staff The Texas A&M University men’s track team finished second, just points behind the University of Tex as, in the City of the Palms Invita tional track and field meet in McAl len Saturday. The Aggies performed well, said coach Charlie Thomas, but little things kept them from winning. Top sprinter Curtis Dickey was in Col lege Station attending the annual football banquet and didn’t partici pate in his specialties — the 100- meter sprint and the 400-meter re lay, and a strong wind kept NCAA indoor pole vault champion Randy Hall from even placing in that event at this meet. The Aggies captured the rest of the field events. Tim Scott set a meet record in winning the discus (196-6), and Sam Wilson also set a record in the long jump (24-4V2). Other victo rious Aggies were Chuck Perry in the high jump and Mike Newsom in the javelin. In the running events, Texas A&M’s Leslie Kerr set a meet record in the 400-meter dash. Thomas rested some key athletes to avoid injuring them. “What we re trying to do is not get anyone hurt, ’ he said. Don’t look now, Aggie baseball fans, but the Freshman Wonders have struck again. Rick Luecken and Robert Slavens both picked up their sixth wins Saturday in leading Texas A&M Uni versity to a 3-0, 5-4 sweep of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Luecken and Slavens, both 6-0 and leading the Southwest Confer ence in wins, had to struggle to win their respective ballgames. But timely Aggie hitting and superlative defensive plays were the deciding factors. The Aggies also knocked off the Red Raiders Friday, 10-7, to stay lYa games behind the Texas Longhorns. The Aggies are now 22-4 on the sea son with a 9-3 SWC record. Texas is 27-2 on the season and 9-0 in the conference. In the first game of Saturday’s dou ble-header, the Aggie bats were stifled until Harry Francis knocked a triple off the center field wall in the fourth inning of the seven-inning game. He was stranded, but it was an omen of things to come. In the fifth, Doug Teague slam med a double off of Tech starter Steve Ibarquen (2-4) and Joe Paul Bramhall followed with an infield single to move Teague to third. Bramhall stole second, and Randy Woodruff slapped a single to left to score both players. Simon Glenn rapped a double, moving Woodruff to third. Francis then plated the third run with a sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Luecken was effec tively slipping his way out of several jams, backed up by five double plays. The Woodruff-Twig Little double play combination drew the most applause from the approxi mately 1000 fans attending the games. The most spectacular play of the game came in the top of the third inning, when Woodruff got off an accurate throw to complete a double play despite being off-balance, avoiding a hard slide by a Tech player. The nine-inning second game, played under occasionally very win dy conditions and cloudy skies, pro duced a bit more action. The Aggies pounded Tech starter Terry Willis, 2-2, for three runs on four hits in the first inning on a single by Little, an RBI single by Francis, a double by Hodde and a single by Mike Hurdle. Slavens had a little trouble with his control, issuing three walks in eight innings, and allowing 10 hits. He gave up all four of the Red Raid ers’ runs, but held Tech at bay most of the time. He was replaced in the eighth by Perry Kilgo, who promptly gave up two hits. Bobby Taylor then came in to preserve the victory for Slavens. The Aggies hitting display was highlighted by Hodde’s fifth-inning home run over the centerfield fence, his ninth of the year. The homer turned out to be the winning run. Between the two games, Texas A&M baseball coach Tom Chandler was given an award recognizing his 500th career victory, which came March 2 against Baylor. Washington Redskins football coach Jack Pardee was also recog nized between games. Pardee was in town to speak at the Texas A&M foot ball banquet Saurday night.
