NAIROBI, Kenya — The family of Joy Adamson Tuesday went ahead with the cremation of her body at a private ceremony. But questions on the circumstances of the famed natu ralist’s death persisted. Police were questioning three men suspected of using a twin-edged African sword to stab Mrs. Adamson, who gained worldwide fame with her “Born Free” series about Elsa the orphan lion cub. Her body was found on her game preserve last Thursday and initial re ports said she had been mauled by a lion. “We’re having a private ceremony for the family at the crematorium, but there will be no public ceremony at all,” said Ellis T. Monke, a local wildlife official and close family friend. Police sources said Monday the three suspects all were former em ployees of Mrs. Adamson whom she had dismissed in the past few months. They said a police autopsy had shown on Friday Mrs. Adamson had died of wounds from a sharp instru- ment, probably a twin-bladed “simi, ” an African knife that closely resembles a small sword. Police Commissioner Ben Gethi told the Kenya News Agency the case was being treated as a “mur der, although he did not disclose a possible motive. Newspaper reports said Mrs. Adamson’s car had been stolen from the scene of the crime, at her Shaba game camp, some 250 miles north of Nairobi. The original police report, which said Mrs. Adamson had been mauled by a marauding lion, was based on a quick observation by Mrs. Adam son’s assistant, and not a medical exam, officials said. During the weekend. President Daniel Arap Moi announced a police investigation into her death after new facts had come to light. The facts were believed to be the results of a pathologist’s autopsy which showed puncture wounds on her body rather than the marks nor mally caused by a lion’s claws. Mrs. Adamson had been studying the habits of leopards at the time of her death. She was found lying on the ground about 100 yards from her barbed-wire enclosed compound af ter failing to return from an evening stroll.
