It is important that she not destroy any evidence by changing clothes or bathing. “A woman’s only evidence is her body,” Hope said. “Even brushing her hair or going to the bathroom can destroy evidence. After the medical examination, the counselor will help the woman prepare a written transcript of what happened while it is still fresh in her mind. “It is extra important for a woman to go back over the incident as soon as possible before she puts it away in her mind,” Hope said. “There are a lot of reactions to this type of loss,” she said. “We try to take care of (the victim) emotion ally. Some are immediately okay, but then weeks later fall to pieces. ” Hope said no mention of the inci dent will go into the student’s rec ords or transcripts. “We are confidential within the limits of the law,” Hope explained. "We are required by law to do what we can to preserve life.” The rape victim doesn’t have to press charges or have the medical examination to receive counseling from Hope or Dinuzzo. “We re not going to force them to prosecute,” Hope said. “Some women don’t want to go through that.” If the victim decides to not have the medical exam, she can call the Personal Counseling Service (845- 4427) for help with her emotional needs. After 5 p.m. and on weekends, she can call the Health Center (845-1511) and they will help her get in touch with one of the counselors. Another service is the Crisis Hot line (779-2000) run by the Mental Health — Mental Retardation Cen ter. They are not yet a 24-hour serv ice but hope to be soon. A seminar on rape prevention was held on campus in the fall of 1978, Larabee said, but in spite of exten sive advertising only 40 people at tended. “Of those 40 people, 90-100 per cent felt better prepared,” she said. A part of the seminar was a panel discussion in which University Police Chief McDonald and other members talked about rape preven tion. They said a woman should: —Always have her keys in her hand when she walks to the car. —Always check the back seat be fore getting into the car. —Keep doors locked at all times. —Use only her initials in mailbox and telephone listings. —Avoid walking alone. Most important, women at Texas A&M should be aware that they are not immune to the dangers of possi ble rape simply because they live in a college town. Although a woman can’t spend her life cringing in fear every time she sees a man, it is wise to be cau tious — especially if she is alone. campus briefs Ai?M chosen to administer scholarship The director of the Legislative Budget Board has chosen Texas A&M University to award a scholarship which has been established in his name.
