Following the successful lead of itlier academic disciplines which i be sent their students out of the classroom to work alongside profes- ; iionals, Texas A&M University’s I College of Business Administration i is set to begin a training program of i its own this fall. The program is called cooperative i education — or co-op to most stu- i dents— and has been used for years ■ in engineering. Students who co-op : isually alternate a semester in the i classroom with a semester working bra major business or corporation. ] Ihey receive a grade for their on- i le-job performance, but more im- lortant, university officials say the i itudents are exposed to real world j iroblems outside the traditional i lassroom experience. Wayne Terrell, newly appointed j sordinator of cooperative education n business administration, said he ipects industry officials to welcome j wsiness students with open arms. “A program like this gives a stu- lent a clear sense of where he is ping and at the same time provides j mediate value to the employer,” A ferrell said. “I see no problem in siting th program going quickly. “Initially we will start in the spring nth five to 15 students, but I fully sipect these people to be the rendsetters in the effort that will eventually have a snowballing effect rfdrawing more students into the program." Several companies already have expressed interest in participating in the Texas A&M effort. Placement will focus on the Southwest, primar ily in the Houston, Dallas and Beaumont areas where the concen tration of industry is the greatest. “These students aren’t going to be ‘go-fers’ either,” he said. “What they will have is a meaningful position to gain a conceptual knowledge of that business. “It is not just a summer job situa tion,” Terrell said. “The program will be designed to operate year round in order to match the best stu dent with the best company.” From prior experience in indus try, Terrell said the typical coopera tive student is often a goal-oriented person, which is precisely what business leaders are demanding. In addition to placing students in the real world of business, Terrell will be promoting the executive de velopment programs of the College of Business Administration. “More and more universities are putting increased emphasis on get ting the professional who has been away for some time to come back to school to update or learn new skills, and Texas A&M is one of the leaders in this type of executive develop ment training,” Terrell said. “There is a real need for this type of intensified training,” he said. —m>.— ■s ess® 3109 Texas Avenue Bryan, Texas 77801 RESTAURANT presents Happy Hour 4-6 (7 days a week) 2 for 1 per person 10% discount for all A&M students with current I.D.
