McKenzie-Baldzvin BUSINESS COLLEGE Inquire About Our Term Starting July 10 Phone 822-6423 or 822-2368 Vet school starts four-year program beginning in the fall THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1979 Page 3 BY KEITH TAYLOR - Battalion Staff -The Texas A&M University Col lege of Veterinary Medicine is join ing the rest of the University in a four-year education program begin ning the fall semester of 1979. The college has been on a three- year trimester program since 1964. “There are many reasons for the change,” said Dr. Wallace Bay, as sociate dean of the college. “We want to slow down the pace for the students. We want to give them an opportunity to reflect on what they have been studying. This will give them more time to think, develop thoughts, and put together the two. Also it will give them an opportunity to work with a veteri narian during the summer months.” The 138 students entering the col lege in the fall will be divided into two groups. One group will pursue the three-year program and the other will start the four-year plan at the end of their sophomore year. The class will be divided to phase in the four-year program. Bay said. The first class to go completely through the four-year program will be the students entering in the fall of 1980. The new program has been planned for several years, but the veterinary school administration only recently reached finalization of the plan, he said. The new plan will probably help extend research opportunities be cause of the open summer, Bay said. The smaller number of students in the summer will allow professors and senior students more time to work on research projects. The current program gives the students three weeks vacation in December and August and one week off in April. Senior students will continue to have staggered vacation periods with the four-year program. Surveys were taken of student, faculty, and former students. Bay said. The majority in all the surveys were in favor of the change, he said. The Board of Regents approved the new program at their meeting May 22.
