COLLEGE STATION BRYAN-AUSTIN United Press International HOUSTON — Making its deci sion by law and not by conscience, a jury Thursday sentenced Ignacio Cuevas to die by injection for caus ing the 1974 death of a Huntsville prison librarian during an escape at tempt led by Fred Gomez Carrasco. Cuevas, 47, showed no emotion as, for the second time, he was sen tenced to death for the Aug. 3, 1974, killing of Julia Standley. Cuevas’ first trial and death sen tence in 1975 were overturned by a Texas appeals court because of an error in jury selection. The latest capital murder conviction and death sentence also will be appealed au tomatically. Cuevas was the only one of three Huntsville prison inmates to survive as the rebels, who had held hostages in a prison library for 11 days, at tempted escape inside a makeshift shield fashioned from bulletin boards and law books. They were met by water from fire hoses and Filly wins lab ‘rat race’ United Press International LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rosalynn, a three-month-old filly, is the reign ing champion of “Run for the Ro dents,” Spalding College’s un sanctioned version of the Kentucky Derby for laboratory rats. The seventh annual event, billed as a “light-hearted parody” of next week’s Derby, was run Wednesday in the unthoroughbred surround ings of the college’s library cour tyard. Winning 25-cent bets re turned 30 cents. Rosalynn received an unlimited dinner of sugarcoated cereal. There’s a bonus for the winners. They are now assured of escaping the probing curiosity of biology stu dents next fall and will spend the winter breeding next year’s “Rat Race” field. finally a barrage of Texas Rangers’ bullets. Evidence indicated a bullet from another inmate’s gun killed Mrs. Standley, but Texas law dictated Cuevas could be tried for capital murder as an accomplice. Rangers said that, before they fired on the shield, they heard the muffled gunshots of the hostages being killed. To return a death sentence, the jury had to find Cuevas intentionally killed Mrs. Standley. 1‘ Petal Patch "YOUR COMPLETE FLORIST" 696-6713 SENIOR RING DANCE FOR A NATURALLY LIGHT LUNCH Come to the Sbisa Dining Center Basement. Murphy then contracted pneumonia and doctors discovered a heart murmur, a condition in which one of the valves fails to close com pletely as the heart pumps. The gorilla was taken to Childrens Memorial Hospital and pediatri cians specializing in heart and diges tive surgery were called in. A fire swept through the zoo’s nursery Jan. 13. Murphy’s sister, Tara, was killed as well as a South American cat and several rare birds. “He’s rough, tough and indepen dent, and he loves a crowd,” Sim mons said. “He’s just like his old man.” Murphy, born last December, is the son of Casey the gorilla. “Because we’ve put in so much time and effort and emotion,” Sim mons said, “he’s become rather spe cial to us. “He’s our first little male gorilla and he acts like it,” Simmons said. “He’s the macho type.” Now is the time to have your portrait made at AB PHOTOGRAPHY 'Class of *79 special’ call now for information and an appointment. 846-0487 3711 E. 29th St., Bryan Town i?
