While Houston was taking the team honors. Couples and SMU’s Payne Stewart finished as co medalists with five-under par, 211 Scores for the 54-hole tournament at a rain-soaked Briarwood Country Club. Stewart, who started the day a shot behind Couples, joined Mitch ell with the low rounds of the day at two-under-par 70. But with a birdie on the final hole, Couples finished in a 70-stroke deadlock with Stewart. Stewart later beat Couples in a first-hole sudden death match for the single invitation to the Colonial National Invitational Tournament in Fort Worth next month. “The key to the round was 26 putts,” said Stewart, a Springfield, Mo., senior. “If I hadn’t putted so well, I could have had a 77 pretty easily. Before I came to the tourna ment, I was aiming for a 210 total. ” Couples, a sophomore from Seat tle, was 20 feet from the pin, looking at an eagle putt that would have won him the individual crown outright. But his try slid a foot past on Briar- woods’ slick green. Stewart had missed an 8-foot putt on the same hole about a half-hour earlier. Texas A&M finished second at 884, led by Steve Bowman at 215. Texas and TCU finished at a tie for third with 900, followed by Arkan sas, 903; SMU, 913; Texas Tech, 915; Rice, 933; and Baylor, 934. By KURT ABRAHAM Battalion Sports Staff In continuing his team’s rebuild ing efforts, Texas A&M tennis coach David Kent has signed Brian Joel- son of Aloha High in Portland, Ore. to a national letter of intent to at tend Texas A&M University next fall. Currently the number one high school player in Oregon, Joelson won that state’s AAA high school singles championship in 1978 as a junior and is the favorite to repeat this year. Joelson had been considering the University of California-Santa Bar bara, Arizona State and the Univer sity of Washington as his college possibilities before making a trip to Texas A&M last month. It was the Aggies’ new tennis facilities and the chance to be a top player on an up and coming team that apparently swung Joelson in favor of A&M. Kent said he expects the 6-1, 165 pound Joelson to play a major role for the Aggies in the future. “He is the type of player we need at Texas A&M to turn our program around,” Kent said. “He has speed, dedication and talent to play South west Conference caliber tennis. He only lacks experience.” Undefeated in competition this season, Joelson has been playing competitively since the age of nine and has always been ranked among the top ten players in every age bracket he has played in. Joelson’s latest major win in the Pacific Northwest Section was on April 1 when he won all four of his matches at the Challenge Tourna ment in Seattle. The win enabled Joelson to remain the number one player in the Junior Men’s division for the season. It is more exciting to realize the Texas Club has only been in existance for two years and is more than competitive with touring European teams.
