TRIGG CRAWFORD Battalion Reporter “Strong legs run that weak legs might walk” is the theme for this year’s Spring Olympics 10,000 Meter Fun Run, sponsored by Mc Donald’s Restaurant to benefit the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center. The 6.2-mile race, open to all run ners and joggers, will start at 8 a.m. Saturday. The route will be from Briarcrest to the East Bypass. The entry fee is $5 for those who don’t want to buy a T-shirt and $7.50 for those who do. Registration forms and more information are available at McDonald’s and the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center, and should be turned in by Thursday. Prizes for the top finishers will be donated by the Athletic Attic, Locker Room, Outfitters and Wyatt’s Sporting Goods. On the same day of the Fun Run, the Spring Olympics track meet will also try to raise money for the center. It is expected to draw 1,000 children and is open to handicapped and non-handicapped children between the first and eighth grades. The meet will be held at Bryan High School’s stadium. Registration will start at 8 a. m. and opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. Penny Franklin, student coor dinator for both events said that the opening ceremonies will be like those of the real Olympics. “The ceremonies will start with the raising of the flag by area Boy Scouts,” Franklin said. “An invoca tion will be given, the children will walk in with their schools while the band plays, and then a torch will be lit and carried by a handicapped child.” All children participating are re quired to have sponsors who will pay at least 25 cents. All money collected will go to the Rehabilitation Center. The two who collect the most money will receive either a free, one-night stay at the Astroworld Hotel and free passes for a family of four, or a portable AM/FM 8-track tape player. Events include a frisbee throw, a softball throw, the high jump, an ob stacle course and several running events. There will be a special race of champions for handicapped chil dren, and a wheelchair and crutches race for handicapped and non handicapped children. The Texas A&M women’s gymnas tics team and Texas A&M’s gymnas tic club will present tumbling exer cises, and the A&M Consolidated High School Band will play the music for the opening ceremonies. ir-it BA I i ALIUN Page 3 MONDAY, APRIL 16, 1979 NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK, APRIL 15-21 TAMU LIBRARY presents DR.
