Page 4 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1979 ‘Jogging not best exercise’ DeBakey quits transplants Viet attackerr; 0 a close on United Press International LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Dr. Michael DeBakey, a cardiovascular expert who performed some of the world s first heart transplants, said Monday he was performing no heart transplant surgery and did not ex pect to in the future because of the low success rate. The Houston cardiovascular specialist said he performed a total of 12 heart transplants and two of the patients survived. He has done no transplants for two years. DeBakey did not rule out the pos sibility of remarkable new advances in transplant technique but said he was not involved in the research. H e said the advent of bypass surgery lessened the importance of heart transplants. DeBakey spoke here Monday to the First International Congress on Cardiovascular Diseases and Surgery. He recommended a regular prog ram of exercise such as weekend tennis to strengthen the heart rather than irregular bursts of vigorous ac tivity. “Jogging is not the best form of exercise for some people,” said De Bakey, professor and chairman of surgery at Baylor University in Houston. He said before a person entered a jogging exercise program he or she should first undergo a thorough medical examnation. DeBakey em phasized an examination was not full proof and pointed to several in stances within the past year in which joggers suffered fatal heart at tacks despite examinations by car diologists that showed no apparent stress on a susceptible heart, jog- danger. ging can also involve injury to In addition to placing too much bones, joints and muscle, said De- Mark White to ask for more money United Press International AUSTIN — Attorney General Mark White says the agency he as sumed Jan. White, who was elected attorney general to replace John Hill, said he will ask the Senate Finance Com mittee Wednesday for an emergency appropriation of $906,000. “There are insufficient funds to last through the biennium,” White “We need the money to make certain we will maintain the same level of employement in the office.” White, who refused to criticize Hill’s use of the budget, said the ad ditional funds are needed for staff and settling the Howard Hughes es tate case and a lawsuit against the Texas Department of Corrections. Bakey. “Brisk walking is one of the best forms of exercise,” he said. “I urge my patients to leave their cars at home and walk to work, if it is only eight or nine miles a day. “And just going up and down stairs is great exercise,” said. “You can tell just how lazy a person is when you see him take the elevator rather than walk down one flight of stairs.” Dr. W. Dudley Johnson of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee disagreed with Debakey on jogging. “Bah, you can also have a heart attack while driving a car, said Johnson. “It is largely a matter of proper preparation and a gradual in crease in the time and distance in volved. ” United Press International BANGKOK, Thailand — A Vietnamese-led column preceded by Cambodian rebel scouts, Monday slowly closed in on the town of Poipet near the Cambodia- Thailand border, tightening the in vaders’ already solid grip on Cam bodia. But officials at the Thai border said they believed the Vietnamese were delaying the capture of Poipet — the final target in their 22-day blitzkreig — to allow reporters to witness Cambodian rebels, rather than Vietnamese, capturing the town. Despite intelligence reports to the contraiy, Vietnam has persis tently claimed the invasion is the work of the Hanoi-backed Cambo dian “Salvation Front,” not a Vietnamese offensive. Old, ragged-clothed country folks chanted “Down With Oppression” or “We Are Hungry” in a peaceful demonstration Sunday. They tried to see Hua but guards at his house turned them away. The demonstration — the second within a week — drew hundreds of spectators as the protesters marched down the capital’s Wangfuching Street. The marchers waved buntings which said: “Persecuted Peope From All Over China,” and “We Demand Democracy And Human Rights.” Many of the demonstrators were formerly workers in urban areas sent to the countryside for work- reformation during the tumultuous Cultural Revolution in the mid- 1960s. ve survived a idjis that peopl j . e Storm’s land!
