Thousands of grackles, members of the American blackbird family, are roosting each evening on the southwest side of the campus, mainly in the area of the football stadium and MSC. A truck loaded with the gas can non, which only makes a loud noise, and a recording of bird distress ealls amplified through speakers will be working the area from 7:45 p.m. until dusk for about a week, Eugene Ray, director of grounds mainte nance said. The synchronized noises unsettle the birds and they seek a quiet place, he says. It is the same technique used suc cessfully last year to roust migratory birds from populated and high pedestrian use areas. Birds have been a problem for several years, Ray said, but usually it begins in late October with the migration from the north. Ray expects the latest bird prob lem to be settled within a week. He plans to use three similar trucks this fall when the migratory birds visit the numerous evergreen oaks on the campus.
