Gas cannon, distress calls used
to scare birds from campus trees
Using a propane gas cannon and
amplified distress calls, Texas A&M
ground maintenance workers are
evicting birds from the trees in the
Kyle Field area.
Thousands of grackles, members
of the American blackbird family,
are roosting each evening on the
southwest side of the campus,
mainly in the area of the football
stadium and MSC.
A truck loaded with the gas can
non, which only makes a loud noise,
and a recording of bird distress ealls
amplified through speakers will be
working the area from 7:45 p.m.
until dusk for about a week, Eugene
Ray, director of grounds mainte
nance said.
The synchronized noises unsettle
the birds and they seek a quiet
place, he says.
It is the same technique used suc
cessfully last year to roust migratory
birds from populated and high
pedestrian use areas.
Birds have been a problem for
several years, Ray said, but usually
it begins in late October with the
migration from the north.
Ray expects the latest bird prob
lem to be settled within a week. He
plans to use three similar trucks this
fall when the migratory birds visit
the numerous evergreen oaks on the
campus.
