United Press International WASHINGTON — The Federal Trade Commission - already waging an attack on sugar-laden TV com mercials aimed at children - is going after comic books. The agency announced Thursday it is opening an industry-wide inves tigation of comic book advertising to determine if children are being tricked or deceived by the kinds ol ads carried in them. In addition it said it wants to know if it’s deceptive to use comic book characters or personalities to push products on the pages of the same books in which they cavort. The FTC’s Seattle regional office, which will conduct the investigation to determine if some action needs to be taken, said preliminary estimates indicate that $5 million a month is being spent on comic book advertis ing. In addition it said the industry es timates that 92 percent of children between the ages 8 and 10, and 82 percent of those between the ages of 5 and 7, are comic book readers. It also said preliminary studies indicate 25 percent of the average i has ii te cam-- )-$55Qp have alls i. and Us Mso tato sr and McMuits Pet adoption set at Hensel Park tl ■d. PosiB ply in pen; ime ith mail i ref erred Sutler te 1# By JANA THIEME The Humane Society of Brazos County will sponsor Pet Adoption Day Saturday, April 29, in Hensel Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The animals are required to pass a general health exam this Saturday. A local veterinarian and some Texas A&M University vet students will give the animals examinations from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hensel Park. Charlotte Woods, treasurer of the HSBC said the adoption fee will be $20 for dogs and $16 for cats. “All of the pets will be spayed and neutered and will have the appro priate distemper shots beforehand. All these things will be included in the adoption price, ” she said. The HSBC sponsors the pet adop tion day about four times a year. “There is no profit involved. Woods said. “The fact is that we lose money each time we have the adop tion day. There is no fund raising at all.” Woods said she considered the adoption day a very sucessful opera tion. “Most of the people who need to get rid of their pets are students leaving the University, she said. “If any of the pets are adopted, it’s a worthwhile project.” In the past adoption days, over 50 percent of the pets were adopted. Those not adopted will be taken to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter in Hous ton. “The reason they are taken to Houston is because neither College Station, Bryan or Brazos County will provide Rinds to build an SPCA shelter close by. Anyone wanted to find a new home for his pet is urged to bring the animal to the screening day this Saturday. The FTC said it wants to know whether children are being victimized by comic book ads that fail to disclose what is involved in the original purchase price — bat teries that are part of toys, for example — and whether young readers are being suekered into buy ing products which do not perform the way the ads claim they do. It also will look at whether comic books are being used to push prod ucts to children which are danger ous or should not be marketed for kids, whether the ads foster habits or attitudes which are bad for chil dren and whether the ads cause children to put pressure on their parents to buy things, with resulting family discord.
