Publisher retires from A&M press m Campus Activities Frank VVardlaw, who began two of the Southwest’s leading scholarly presses, is retiring after more than 25 years in publishing. In the process of overseeing pub lication of nearly 800 books, VVardlaw worked with Texas writers J. Frank Dobie, Roy Bedichek and Walter Prescott Webb, among others. For the past four years, Wardlaw has served as director of the Texas A&M University Press, which he founded. He became the first director of the University of Texas Press in 1950, five years after he launched his publishing career by starting the University of South Carolina Press. Wardlaw is moving back to his na tive South Carolina, where he and his wife have a retirement home. While stepping down as head of the Texas A&M Press Sept. 1, he will continue to serve as a consulting editor and be available for special assignments and programs. To say that Frank Wardlaw was the right man for us is to grossly un derstate the case,” said Texas A&M Chancellor Jack K. Williams. “He was the only person who could do the job — certainly on the quantity- quality scale that has been done in such a short time. He is the best in the business and we are proud to have had him at A&M. “We are counting on him to con tinue to make available to us his wealth of knowledge about the pub lishing business and we know he will continue to use his considerable influence in attracting top authors to our press. ” Wardlaw said the Texas A&M Press is off to a good start and has a bright future. The future of the press is bright,” he said. “We have a highly competent and dedicated staff and have built a small but solid backlist and that’s terribly important.” That backlist includes as many as *★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★-* Entertaining during + HAPPY HOUR * today J 4-7 p.m. 4- Friday TAMU Weightlifting Team, National Collegiate Powerlifting Championship, starting at 9 a.m., Louisiana Tech, Ruston, La.
