THE BATTALION Page 3 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1978 Sbisa’s remodeling still goes on and on Silver Taps By DANA GAR DINA The motto, “Sbisa, home of per- jetual construction, has come bout during the past two years be- ause of the time it lias taken to re- nodel. Sbisa is a two-story dining hall hat serves the north area dorms at exas A&M University. The up- tairs section is currently being re- odeled. Remodeling was scheduled to be inished in December 1976, said doyd Smith, assistant director of bod services. Frank Larvin, general contractor, tailed remodeling around March 976, but because of a subcontrac- or’s delay in equipment delivery he las not completed the project. Lar in has had extensions on the con- ract since December 1976. “Sbisa is near completion,” Lar in said. “We have finished all but he pot and pan phase.” The majority of the work is finished, but contractors need to put the tile in the ceiling of the pot and pan section, Smith said. It has been speculated that the remodeling will be completed by fall, 1978, almost two years past the scheduled completion date. How ever, Smith said it should be finished “prior to the fall.” He said he couldn’t give a more specific date. “There have been equipment breakdowns, contractor delays, and equipment delivery delays,” said John Merchant, manager of con struction at the physical plant. “They are way over the time limits of the contract.” Smith said they are having “fits” with the contractors. “The contrac tor is far behind schedule.” Smith said that it would be dif ficult to switch contractors. He said he doesn’t have a right to change contractors. The plan was to have the lower section, Peniston, as a temporary cafeteria while remodeling the sec ond floor of Sbisa. When the new section is finished, Peniston will re turn to a cash cafeteria. It will then be closed to board students. The new section will have five cafeteria lines. The number of open sections will depend on the number of people being served. Smith said that when the section is completed, it will cost less to op erate Sbisa because the new system will reduce work. Employees now take. dishes and food upstairs and down again because the present equipment in Peniston can’t ac comodate board students. Each sec tion will have equipment in propor tion to the number of people being served. Smith said Food Services will not need to fire anyone because they w ill use employees in the cash facilities. The new section will seat the same number of people as Peniston and offer the same choice of foods, Smith said.
