Class of ’78 to select agents By MARLA RAGLAND Seniors interested in being elected class agent for the class of 78 may attend a workshop for class agents on Feb. 18. Class agents are the formal repre sentatives of the class to the Associa tion of Former Students and are charged with keeping class mem bers informed about association acitivies and Texas A&M Univer sity. Interested seniors should register with Olive DeLucia, class program director of the association, before Feb. 17. Her office is located in the Forsyth Center of the MSC. The workshop will be held in conjunc tion with the spring meeting of the association council. DeLucia said the association is encouraging seniors to run in pairs and serve as co-class agents because of the size of the graduating class. Candidates are required to have a petition signed by 78 of their classmates. The class agents will be elected for a five-year term at the senior in duction banquet which is the formal induction into the Association of Former Students. The banquets for May graduates will be held April 17 and 18. The class agent has five primary responsibilities. He is responsible for representing the class on the As sociation of Former Students Coun cil. The council holds meetings twice a year in College Station. Phil Callahan has served as a class agent for the class of‘69 almost nine years. He is a research associate with the Texas Real Estate Research Center. “Another responsibility is to write class letters,’ Callahan said. “The purpose of these letters is to inform class members about what’s going on at Texas A&M and what their classmates are doing. Each class agent writes two or three letters a year. The association provides the stationery, mailing list, printing and postage. All we really have to do is write it.” In conjunction with this duty, class members are encouraged to write to their class agent and inform him about their changes of address, job promotions, marriages and births. The class agent then informs the association. One of the most time-consuming activities is the formal class reunion which each class holds every five years. The agent must tell all class members when and where the re union will be held and then handle the arrangements. Class agents also help coordinate numerous informal reunions. Class members may have reunions in parking lots after football games in Houston or Dallas. Another duty of a class agent is to encourage class members to con tribute to the annual fund, which the association raises from alumni contributions to support academic and other programs of the univer sity.
