Award WILLIE FOREMAN JOEY ROBINSON Kev in Monk, senior linebacker from Segnin, won the coveted Aggie Heart Award Saturday night at Texas A6c Ms annual Football Awards Program. The award, based on such traits as effort, desire, dedication and perse verance, was determined by a se cret vote of all members of the 1977 A&M football squad. It was pres ented to Monk by Dr. Jarvis Miller, president ofTexas A&M University. Monk, a four-year varsity letter- man, was an academic all-America and winner of a post-graduate schol arship from the National Football Foundation; Coach Emory Bollard presented certificates to managers, trainers, football squad men and 54 varsity lettermen. First-team all-SVVC awards were made to center Mark Dennard, safety Carl Grulieh and tackles Frank Myers and Cody Ri- sien. Also, captain awards went to Dennard, Monk, quarterback David Walker and cornerback Mike Williams. Aggie notes and quotes Swimmers go west Gymnasts unbeaten Hogs come to town A win for women Lan llll The Texas A&M men’s and women’s imming teams will take a two-day trip to rizona this weekend. The Aggies meet rizona in Tucson Friday and Arizona State Tempe on Saturday. The men’s team lost a dual meet to Hous- Friday, 89-26. The top performance was Roger Lien who set a school record of 43.91 in the 1000-yd freestyle. The women’s team lost to Houston, 39, Friday and to LSU, 73-48, Saturday. In the Houston meet, Cheryl Houghton set a school record with a 27.31 in the 50-yd lutterfly, and the 200 freestyle relay team of jhirley Hill, Debbie Starr, Jeannie Buckles od Houghton qualified for nationals with a 40.23. In the LSU meet. Hill set a school rd in the 1000-yd freestyle with 1:43.48 and the 400-yd freestyle relay quai led for nationals with a 3:39.80. Other inners for A&M against LSU were usie Lynde in the 200 butterfly and Stacy Jetz in the 200 breastroke. (l)tii| The Texas A&M women’s gymnastics team will host its second annual A&M in vitational Tournament Saturday at Bryan High School beginning at 1:30 p.m. Entries include Tarleton State, Southwest Texas, Oral Roberts, Odessa College, TCU, Texas and TWU. Coach Jan Fambro’s squad added to its undefeated record last weekend with two victories. The Aggies beat Texas in a dual meet in Austin Friday, 111.70 to 98.10. Patti Sloat took first in all-around while Laura Shelfer was second, Kathy Pruett third and Tanya Hrabal sixth. The Aggies won the Southwest Texas In vitational Saturday in Georgetown over SWT, Texas and TCU. Sloat was second in the all-around with Pruett third and Shelfer fourth. Baseball in Italy Texas A&M baseball coach Tom Chandler has been named to coach the USA baseball team in the Intercontinental Cup Tourna ment in Italy this summer. Chandler will assemble the team in Fair- banks, Alaska, for a week of practice games before going to Italy in late August. The tournament begins Aug. 26 and runs through Sept. 10. 14! The No. 2 team in the nation comes into G. Rollie White Coliseum Thursday to meet the steadily improving Texas Aggies in a 7:30 p.m. Southwest Conference contest. The Arkansas Razorbacks, led by the 10-11 Aggies. Arkansas will be trying to maintain its tie with Texas at the top of the league standings while A&M will be trying to spring a sur prise. The Aggies played their best game of the season Saturday in a 94-89 loss to Hous ton. Freshman Vernon Smith had an out standing game with 31 points and 12 re bounds as A&M battled the Cougars right down to the wire. A&M will go with a starting lineup of 5-11 Dave Goff and 6-5 Joey Robinson at the guards, 6-7 Willie Foreman and 6-5 Rynn Wright at the forwards and 6-7 Smith at center. Moncreif, Delph and Brewer will be joined by 6-11 Steve Schall and 6-7 Jim Counce in the starting five for Arkansas. A&M coach Shelby Metcalf was tremen dously pleased with his team’s play against Houston. “I didn’t know if we could get up after the heart-breaking loss to SMU, Met calf said, “but our players really showedme a lot. You can’t say enough for Dave Goff. He played 40 minutes of outstanding bas ketball. I’m really looking forward to Arkan sas. They are a great basketball team with three of the best players in the country. It should be a great game.’’ The Texas A&M women’s tennis team has three matches scheduled this weekend against top flight competition. Coach Ellen Buchanan’s team meets Lamar in Beaumont Friday, then plays LSU in Baton Rouge Saturday morning and Miami Saturday af ternoon. LSU was fourth and Miami fifth in the USTA Nationals last year. In their opening match of the season last Saturday, the Aggies beat Tyler Junior Col lege 7-3. Kathleen Sissom, Judy Willard, Elise Richardson, Debbie Odum, Alexis Hefley, and Betty Schillcutt won singles matches while Susan Schilling and Sissom won in doubles. Losses for men Coach Richard Barker’s Texas Aggies beat S.F. Austin and Lunar and lost to Hous ton in the Lamar Invitational in Beaumont last weekend. A&M beat SFA 9-0 and Lamar 7-2 while losing to UH 7-2. In singles, Trey Schutz won all three matches. Max King, Mike Moss, Robin Baker and Jim Grubert won two and lost one while Reid Freeman won one and lost two. In doubles, Moss and Baker won all three matches. Schutz and Grubert won two and lost one, and King and Freeman won one and lost two. The Aggies play St. Edward’s here Friday and North Texas here Saturday.
