James Moore, Chaplain Captures purse at Texas 500 Bay Darnell spoils Foyt’s drive By BO GRIFFIN In a race that saw the track tem peratures reach well over 140 de grees, A. J. Foyt Day became Bay Darnell Day in the Texas 500 at Texas World Speedway yesterday. Prior to the race, the day was proclaimed A. J. Foyt Day in honor of his driving accomplishments and especially his fourth unprecedented win at Indianapolis a week ago. Proclamations from numerous Texas officials as well as President Jimmy Carter were acknowledged by the Houston native. Darnell, driving a big block Dodge 426 hemi, outlasted a field of 33 drivers, including eight from Texas, in the 98 degree heat to win the fifth Texas 500 in front of a crowd of 35,000. In the winners circle just seconds after getting the checkered flag, Darnell said, “I can’t believe it. My Now Better Than Ever. You Will Be Pleased With These Carefully Prepared and Taste Tempting Foods. Each Daily Special Only $1.59 Plus Tax. “Open Daily” Dining: 11 AM to 1:30 PM — 4:00 PM to 7 PM MONDAY EVENING TUESDAY EVENING WEDNESDAY SPECIAL SPECIAL EVENING SPECIAL Salisbury Steak Mexican Fiesta Chicken Fried Beef with Dinner Steak w/cream Mushroom Gravy Two Cheese and Gravy Whipped Potatoes Onion Enchiladas Whipped Potatoes and Your Choice of w/chili Choice of one other One Vegetable Mexican Rice Vegetable 1 Roll or Corn Bread and Butter Patio Style Pinto Beans Roll or Corn Bread and Butter Coffee or Tea Tostadas Coffee or Tea One Corn Bread and Butter Coffee or Tea racing strategy worked out better than I had planned. I knew I couldn’t outrun A. J., so I just ran tight, hoping A. J.’s car would break and that’s exactly what happened. I’ve been racing USAC (United States Auto Club) stock cars since 1962 and have won three races in the past 18 months. Maybe I’m on my way now.” The win was Darnell’s first major victory. It was a thrilling race that saw Foyt, the defending champ from last year’s 500, clearly dominate the first 250 miles. On lap 123, Foyt’s Chevrolet Laguna slammed into the wall on turn four, breaking his rear stabilizer and splitting his right rear tire. Foyt was forced to retire from the race because the damage would not allow his car to take in fuel. Foyt, however was not the only track casualty. Ralph Latham spun out on turn two of the two mile Col lege Station oval, breaking a stabilizer bar and leaving the race on the sixth lap. On lap four of the race, San An tonio’s Tom Williams who was the second fastest qualifier, went out on turn two with a blown engine. On lap 14 Houston’s Ricky Ott spun out and hit the wall on turn three and left the race. The race saw many mishaps but fortunately there were no injuries. Ramo Stott of Keokuk, Iowa, driving a small Volare, went out of control at almost the same place that claimed Foyt earlier. Stott, 1975 national champion and currently third in the USAC stock division had a blow out that almost claimed three other drivers. In a race that started 33, only 11 finished the grueling 500 miles. Three Texans were among the one- third that completed the race. H. B. Bailey of Houston finished sixth. Despite the many casualties, Darnell proved his mettle in a race that tested man and machine. He ran his Dodge hemi at speeds of better than 14() miles per hour to take the $11,000 winners purse. The next USAC race scheduled to be at the Texas World Speedway is the Texas 20q Indy car race to be held Sunday, July 31.
