There s a lot of people here and sople are already all over the !aches, the manager said. Officials said the bizarre biologi- 1 coincidence which caused lousands of sharks to gather in one »t to feed off the same swarm of shrimp ended Saturday when the sharks abandoned the warm, shal low waters for the cooler depths of the Gulf of Mexico. A check of the same waters yes terday by Coast Guard and park of ficials showed only a few sharks re mained in the area. “The water is murky and the surf in up about one and a half feet. True sharks just don’t like murky water and rough seas.” Tate said the crowds, numbering more than 10,000 through the weekend, seemed unconcerned about the shark scare yesterday. Most motels in the area reported no vacancies and said they received no cancellations because of the sharks. Sharks are not uncommon in the area, but what Coast Guard Lt. Don Klingenberg saw from his helicopter Wednesday morning was incredible — hundreds of sharks circling and churning the water off Malaquite Beach. Swimmers were warned and the great South Texas shark watch was op. By Thursday and Friday the numbers of sharks, some up to 15 feet in length, had increased into the thousands. They would arrive in the morning to feed, then dissipate in the early afternoon. Meanwhile, shark watching and “Jaw-ism” became the rage of South Texas. “On the CB radio, that’s all campus activities 1 really ned almost 4 ally desensiti roach, heaji orb repeateii es and levelopedt 41pe. nbines initially sm this case, Monday Free University, 140-140AMSC, 7p.m. Crafts, Chair Caning, 141 MSC, 7 p.m. Camera Committee, 308 Tower, 7:30 p.m Brazos Bowmen, 404 Tower, 7:30 p.m. Last day to dr op courses with no record. Atty. Gen. Hill to give talk Wednesday Texas Attorney General John Hill will speak in a public lecture Wed nesday, June 8, at Texas A&M Uni versity. The Brazos County Bar Associa tion and Political Forum, student committee of the university’s Memorial Student Center, are jointly sponsoring the presentation. Hill will speak at the Rudder Center Forum, beginning at 8 p.m. The attorney general’s topic is to be announced. Admission is free for the public. Hill was a February speaker at Texas A&M on problems his office faced. A Houston attorney since 1947, he took office as attorney general for Texas in January, 1973. Hill was secretary of state in 1966-68. He is active in Houston, Texas and American Bar Association ac tivities. A former president of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, he was appointed to the State Bar of Penal Code Revision Committee in 1970 and is a fellow of the Interna tional Academy of Trial Lawyers and member of the board of regents of the National College of District Attorneys. Despite the number of sharks, no injuries were reported although there were several close calls. Two Rockport youths waded in chest high water Friday morning to throw shark bait into the surf for fishermen on the shore. As the two teen-agers headed back toward shore, their paths were momentarily cutoff by four eight- foot sharks who circled them. How ever, the two boys were able to slip through unharmed.
