Page 2 THE BATTALION TUESDAY. AUGUST 31, 1976 Cadet Slouch by Jim Earle Battalion: voice of the students of Texas WELCOME TO OUR ys A campus newspaper is only as in teresting as the student body which it serves. The quality of the newspaper is a function of the editorial personnel which put it together and the level of quality demanded by the reading audience. If the audience is apathe tic and settles for mediocrity, it makes it easier for the newspaper staff to also slide into mediocrity. We at The Battalion will try to provide you with an accurate, truth ful and fair account of the daily events at Texas A&M. We will try to keep our newswriting in the objec tive middle of every issue and re serve our subjective opinions for the editorial page. We request and need reader par ticipation. A student newspaper, in the true sense of the phrase, should reflect the news and views of all segments of the student body. During the course of the semes ter, The Battalion may print or ex press opinions with which you do not agree. These opinions are someone’s legitimate strivings to know and ex press the truth and therefore de serve your respect. Every reader has a standing in vitation to submit his response to anything printed in The Battalion or his opinion on anything of current interest, be it critical or praising. These comments are welcome in the form of “Letters to the Editor” or “Readers’ forum.” We ask only that you confine your criticism to con structive aspects rather than just bitching, and that you observe the limitation on length as set forth elsewhere on this page. “Letters to the Editor” are a very important but often little-used com ponent of the newspaper. Without such a forum, any newspaper would be dull. Editorial statements will reflect the beliefs of the editor, but the editorial/opinion pages of the paper will include the views of columnists and readers, even if these views do not coincide with those of the editor. Editorial stands will be taken with an eye toward what is best for the University. Even though we may sometimes criticize the administra tion, faculty or student body, we will always attempt to maintain a con structive rather than a destructive attitude. We sincerely ask that the Univer sity faculty and administrators coop erate with our staff members. Battal ion reporters in the past have some times been denied by access even to routine irj which then takes hoursto| t through other sources. Through cooperation munication, we can all Texas A&M University, place in which to prepare responsible members o cratic society.
