Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores at A&M Consolidated High School have not declined, Superin tendent Fred A. Hopson said last night. “Scores for our high school have stayed the same, if not actually in creased over the last five years, ” said Hopson, during a meeting of the A&M Consolidated School Board. He said SAT scores for high school juniors and seniors in the school dis trict are consistently above the na tional average. In 1974-75 the national average on the verbal section of the SAT was 368, he said. The SAT scores for the high school are 35.8 points higher than the na tional mean on the verbal section of the test, he said. He said the high school scores were 33.6 points higher than the na tional mean on the math section. Hopson said because only 50 per cent of the students eligible for the SAT actually signed up for the test the statistics could contain some in consistencies. Such “massive non-conformities” indi cate that the ordinance needs to be changed, said Koehler. “Whenever there is a large number of violations, that law should be strongly questioned,” Koehler said. “Maybe the ordinance is asking far more than it should, ” Koehler added. Many of the violating signs were erected prior to the 1972 ordinance, Koehler noted. Because of clerical oversights, sev eral permits have been issued for infracting signs since that time, he said. In a couple cases a contractor has erected a spectacular sign without specifying such on his permit application. In other in stances, Koehler said, bogus permits have been approved because of file mix-ups. Many of these violations are still visible along College Station streets, while other businesses, once notified, soon corrected their violations, Koehler said. “We should have some reasonably prompt program for enforcement, but we re going to have to wait (for additional inspectors),” Koehler suggested. “The city has grown too rapidly, and there’s just not enough time. ” Fish Drill Team takes top honors at Tulane competit Perfect for Students! The Texas A&M Fish Drill Team won first place in the Tulane drill meet at New Orleans, Friday. “Our main competition was against Oregon State — they were the West Coast camps last year, ” said Mike Hoffpauir, drill team comman der. The drill team placed first in the Platoon Basic Drill/Inspection, sec ond in the Squad Basic Drill and first in the Platoon Precision Drill to win the meet. Oregon State came in sec ond overall, followed by last year’s winner, Tulane and the University of Mississippi. Judges for the meet were six drill instructors from the Marine basic training camp at Paris Island, South Carolina. The team drills with Springfield 0-3 rifles weighing 8.7 pounds each, throwing the guns between two rows of men for the precision drill. “We have over 200 weapon throws in a routine, and at the meet we dropped about ten weapons. What impressed the judges was our ability to recover from those mistakes al most instantaneously with little or no loss of bearing,” said Hoffpauir. “It takes good advisers,” said Mil ler. “The senior, junior and sopho more advisers ha ve done one heck of a job this year,” he said. The 35-man drill team was accompanied to New Orleans by seven reserve men and 13 advisers.
