Zoning commission approves bike paths 1 he preliminary plan for bike paths in College Station was ap proved last night by the College Sta tion Planning and Zoning Commit tee. • The proposed bikeways will be laid out along streets surrounding city schools and Texas A&M Univer sity. The main concern is to supply bikeways for the estimated 10,000 A&M bicylists, bike path organizers said. The Environmental Action Coun cil and the A&M Wheelman Commit tee proposed the bike path system which will be submitted to the Fed eral Highway Administration after approval by the College Station City Council. The administration has a special $8 million fund for the improve ment of bikeways that is awarded on a competitive basis. D. D. She said she was heating the water to room temperature for her room mate’s pet fish. The fish was killed in the fire. Residents on the fourth floor smel led the pot burning at noon, but dis counted it as someone cooking. About an hour later, the women across the hall smelled something but remembered that a pair of tennis shoes had been left on the radiator to dry. Finally an aerosol can exploded and a Dunn Hall resident noticed smoke coming from the third floor window. He reported the smoke and maintenance men came and sprayed the room with dry chemicals. The chemicals slowed the advance of the fire, said Lt. Bernie Phipps of the College Station Fire Department. arrived,the fire was pretty much under control, said Phipps. The firemen used very little water except on a set of shelves where the pot was stored. Machol estimated about $200 worth of damage was done to per sonal goods. Campus Brief Dr. Fred Maurer, coordinator of the Institue of Tropical Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M, has com pleted review of a project in Spain on African Swine Fever. Maurer, Distinguished Professor of Veterinary Pathology, spent eight days in the Madrid area on a consult ant basis, then returned to file a re port. The Spanish government is seek ing renewal of a grant for more than $1 million from the World Bank to continue and expand research on Af rican Swine Fever. ASF has been a major handicap to swine production in Spain since 1960 when the disease moved from Africa to Spain. Over 220,000 animals were lost in 1974 by Spanish producers. There will be at least two posi tions open per Council officer. The officers are vice-pres. of Administration, vice-pres. of Finance, and vice-pres. of Programs, Director of Operations, Director of Projects, and Director of Public Relations. The assistant positions involve working with and helping the Council officers in their different duties. The positions are open to freshmen in any field of study who have an interest in Texas A&M and its student programming. Talented people in journalism, graphic arts, business, finance, and administration are needed.
