Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, DEC. 10, 1975 On the couch Student unhappy with forced advisor By DOUG KIRK Psychology Graduate Student Q. My academic advisor is a tyrant. Every semester when I go in to pre-register he tells me what to take and doesn’t ever give me a choice. Even when I have an elective he practically forces one down my throat, saying, “You should have this course.” Can I get rid of him? A. Approach your department head with your problem. State that you would like to have a new advisor. It should be an easy matter to get transferred. You are paying for an education. You should have the ultimate choice as to what courses you take. If you wish to get a degree you will have to fulfill certain academic require ments. Many departments are flexi ble respecting the order in which you take courses. You will have to pay attention to course pre requisites but otherwise you can take any course you want at almost any time. If you have trouble convincing your department head that you want a new advisor, try the dean of your college. Q. I think I’m crazy. Every time I see a girl I feel like the loneliest per son in the world. I haven’t had a date since I left high school. How ■ □□□■EiaCJEJOCIB □□□□QHHOOanB ■■■■BQBQOBBH HOBHDBBPHI3I3EI SALES • SERVICE RENTALS can I find out if there is something wrong with me? A. There is an old psychological axiom that states that people who say they are not crazy generally are and people who say they are crazy are not. But sanity is relative and fear of the lack of it probably should not concern you. The counseling and testing center in the Academic building can ad minister to you the MM PI and some other tests which will possibly help you determine factors about your personality. Your question implies that you did date in high school, so you obvi ously know how to go about accom plishing this task. The ratio of males to females at A&M may scare you into non-dating, but don’t let the statistics get in your way. I was involved in a bit of research recently which measured unobtru sively that not all females at A&M are “taken” on nights that there are big events on campus. A team counted windows which were lit in female dorms during a campus activ ity. As best as could be determined 20 per cent of the women were at home, presumably without dates. (Some of course may have had dates in their rooms, some may have left their lights on — an attempt was made to account for these factors in the statistics.) It would appear that for now at least your problem is not related to not having enough girls around.
