TAMU to study roaches The Environmental Protection Agency has granted $30,000 to the TAMU Department of Entomology for research into the control of urban cockroaches. Project head Dr. Gordon W. Frankie said one of die main objec tives is to reduce the amount of in secticides used in urban areas. It’s believed that 500 million pounds of pesticides were sold to industry, public agencies and homeowners in 1970 alone. “Cockroaches are not known to he vectors of disease hut they are known to carry disease-producing organisms and therefore are a po tential danger, Frankie said. “They also have nauseating habits like de fecating and regurgitating in the food they are eating and some var ieties have a foul odor. “One way to minimize insecticide usage is to learn more about roaches in their urban habitats and to de velop measures for suppressing tlieifT usipg ii' program of chemical biological and habitat control,” he said. “Right now, there is virtually no information of the habits and habitats of cockroaches available, Frankie said. “So we can assume that application of insecticides re sult in low percentage kills, overuse and waste of chemicals and an in crease in the roaches resistance to insecticides. The team's research has resulted in some of the first literature pro duced on the outdoor habits of cock roaches. They are also developing data on the roach’s natural enemy, a small parasitic wasp that destroys roach eggs. Frankie said that the research was not just for the middle-class. He said that psychologists contend that removal of the pest from poor and low cost housing, where they notoriously collect and breed, will actually improve the mental health of the people who live there.
