Baker, Fouraker named 1975 distinguished alums Page 4 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, MAY 6, 1975 BATTALION CLASSIFIED Robert W. Baker, Houston attor ney and banker and former legis lator, and Dr. Lawrence E. Fouraker, dean of the Harvard Uni versity Graduate School of Business Administration, are the 1975 reci pients of A&M’s “Distinguished Alumni Award.” The award, jointly presented by the university and its Association of Former Students, has previously been bestowed on only 47 of the more than 72,000 graduates in the school’s 99-year history. Such rec ognition is reserved for former stu dents “whose exceptional contribu tions to society have singled them out as men of great stature and abil ity.” Formal presentation will be made at commencement exercises Satur day, May 10. Baker, who received a degree in economics from A&M in 1946 and a law degree from the University of Texas in 1949, is chairman of the boards of directors of Guaranty Na tional Bank and Mercantile Bank of Houston. He also has interests in insurance, investment and de velopment companies. The Millican native served 10 years in the Legislature, from 1952 until 1958 in the House of Rep resentatives and the next four years in the Senate. He has been a member of the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University Sys tem, since 1971. iness Administration in 1970. David Max well. Dr. Gooch will become associate dean for research and program de velopment effective July 16. Now head of the History Department, Gooch will replace Dr. A. R. Waters. Waters is leaving to become economics head at Oklahoma State University. Real estate planning conference A&M will host a two-day conference on real estate planning for farmers and ranchers, beginning Monday (May 12). Participants will hear 15 speakers delve into such subjects as techni ques, organization of the estate, valuation problems and liquidation aspects of the farm or ranch during estate planning. The meeting is co-sponsored by the University of Texas School of Law and the Department of Accounting and Executive Development Program of the College of Business Administration. Older than average students group A new organization for students at least 25 years old is being organized. The group, Students Older Than Average (SOTA), will be an informal organization offering fellowship to students such as housewives planning to enter professional careers, those seeking a second career alternative and those taking courses for personal stimulation and growth. Toby Rives, associate director of student affairs who is assisting the group, said a meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the YMCA conference room to plan activities. Cepheids to present ‘Barbarella’ “Barbarella” will be the final Cepheid Variables movie this spring. The science fiction lampoon will show Thursday, at 8 and 10 p. m. in the Rudder Theater. ‘“Barbarella” stars Jane Eonda, John Phillip Law, David Hemmings and Marcel Marceau in a supposition of the future 38,000 years hence. Fonda plays an astronaut who crashes her fur-lined spaceship while trying to locate a missing scientist. Admission will be $1 per person.
