Texas society THE BATTALION Page 3 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 1975 Data reveals increasing woman orientation Recent data analysis indicates Tex as society may become increasingly more woman-oriented in the future. According to a 1974 report released by Robert L. Skrabanek, a Texas A&M professor with the Texas Real Estate Research Center and the De partment of Sociology and Anthro pology, there is in Texas a very important trend from male to female predominance in numbers. Statistics indicate this is a worldwide occur rence in industrialized nations. The changing balance between the sexes becomes a matter of special interest when considered with the recent increasing interest in wom en’s rights movements. A simple measure used to indicate the sex composition of a population is the sex ratio, which is defined as the number of males per 100 females. Since 1890 the number of females in Texas has been consistently growing at a faster rate than males. The sex ratio in Texas in 1890 was 111 males for every 100 females. It nearly became balanced in 1950 when it reached 100.4. Ten years later when he sex ratio was 98.1, there were more females than males for the first time in the state’s his tory. By 1970 there were only 95.9 males per 100 females and the sex ratio is projected to drop to 93.8 by 1980. Skrabanek cites the lower female mortality rate as the major reason for the increase. For babies bom in 1974, the girls can expect to outlive the boys by almost eight years, he said. In Texas, as well as the rest of the nation, there are more males born than females but the mortality rate for males is higher at every age level. By age 20 and thereafter the piargin by which females outnumber males increases steadily at each succeeding age level. According tjo Skrabanek’s report, a large share of the state’s wealth is controlled by women who have sur vived their husbands. The margin by which women outnumber men in the voting ages (18 and over) more than doubled in the past decade alone. Females of voting age in Tex as outnumbered males of voting age by 304,000 in 1970. As this trend continues, politicians likely will be come more receptive to the concerns voiced by women. Skrabanek says the situation could become more balanced by younger men marrying older women, already a trend in some countries. The hus- band-younger-than-wife situation has increased 1,000 per cent in recent years in Great Britain. In Sweden it has increased 1,200 per cent. An other country in which the younger- Pi Compare the savings at FedMart More Meat and Poultry Savings Pork Loin, Countrystyle Ribs .. $1.14ib. Pork Loin Rib Chops $1.49ib. Fryer Thighs 79of ib. House vetoes Many College Proposals Most of the budget proposal sub mitted by the Higher Education Com mittee of the House of Representa tives for state public senior and jun ior colleges were rejected by the House Appropriations Committee last week. Representative Bill Presnal, Ap propriations Committee chairman, said Thursday the proposal by the Higher Education Committee (HEC) was to be the basis for the two-year Appropriations Bill now under con sideration by the House. “We will use the Legislative Budg et Board’s (LBB) recommendations as a base, with the exception of spe cial items, major repairs, and upper level institutions,” Presnal said. The committee plans to complete budgets for A&M and the University of Texas by next week. The Educa tion Committee had proposed to re duce funds for UT and A&M by $30 million, Presnal said.
