Unfortu nately, the bad preceded the good. The Aggies were pitted against Baylor and Sam Houston Friday for the zone championship. A&M brought up the rear with 110 points, 25 behind the runner-up Bear Kats. Baylor gathered 194 marks. “We were pretty well injured. We put ice on some of our people in between races," said Karcher. Despite it all, A&M turned in some fine performances by the likes of Marsha Mitchell and Sharon Boyle. Mitchell won the open quar ter, crossing the stripe at 64.7. Boyle finished second in both the 880-yard run and the mile with times of 2.34.7 and 5.46.7. Debbie Wootan dashed for a 16.2 clocking in the 100-meter hurdles for one of her fastest times of the year. The women’s mile relay quar tet of Jane Weisenfelder, Boyle, Wootan and Mitchell collected a 4.25.7 on the stopwatch. In the field events, Sandra Lyman and Lucy Neiman took sec ond and fifth in the shot. Margaret Alexander leaped to a fourth place spot in the long jump and Jan Wynn tossed the javelin 88-4 for fifth place points. Neiman, Lyman and Jen Nixon placed second, third and fifth in the discus. "We were rejuvenated, said John Havlicek, the 35-year-old cap tain of the Boston Celtics who poured in 30 points and had nine assists in a 123-106 rout of the Hous ton Rockets in their Eastern Con ference semi-final playoff opener Monday night. “Guys like Don Nelson, Paul Silas and myself welcomed the layoffbecause of our age, ” said Hav licek. Meanwhile, in the Western Con ference, the Golden State Warriors came off their nine-day layoff and romped past the Seattle Super- Sonics 123-96 Monday night in the opener of their best-of-seven set. “They just ran us out of here, lamented Sonics Coach Bill Russell. The Golden State players said a key to their fast start was the hard practices which Coach Al Attles put the team through during the long layoff since the close of the regular EMBROIDERY SUPPLIES WORK ' SHIRTS MACRAME BEAD SUPPLIES 401 DUNN STREET WtYAN TEXAS B46 - 4736 3600 Old College Rd. The top three finishers in each event qualified for the state meet in San Marcos. Qualifying from A&M were Mitchell, Boyle, Alexander, Weisenfelder and all three relay teams (the 440, 880 and mile). On Saturday, the women again finished third but this time out of an eight team field in Dallas. The Met- roplex Striders and Baylor took first and second. “I was particularly happy for Lucy and Sandra because they both qual ified for nationals,” Karcher said. Neiman and Lyman made nationals in the discus with throws of 122-7 and 120-1/2. (120 feet is the cutoff point) Mitchell was third in the 440 with a 64.9 and Weisenfelder was fifth in the 100-yard dash with a 12.6. Boyle s fifth place time of 12.21.1 in the two-mile run would have taken first place at zone. She also ran a 2.34.3 half mile. Karcher has been as of late with first year competitor in the shot and discus, Jen Nixon. Nixon was third in the shot with a throw over 30 feet and was fourth in the discus with a 91-6 toss. Wynn again took a fifth in the javelin with a 84-7V / 2 mark. “The girls showed quite a bit of spirit,” said Karcher. “All of them wanted to participate. ” The Aggie women now go to the regional meet held April 25 and 26 at TWU in Denton. "The only rest we got was from traveling,” said high scorer Rick Barry, who had 39 points in the playoff opener. ‘Til guarantee you we run even more in practice than we do in games.” Boston and Golden State will try to keep on running when their series resume Wednesday night, with Houston at Boston and Seattle at Golden State.
